An interesting new study from social media analyst WaveMetrix has taken a look at the United Kingdom’s biggest broadband ISPs to discover which gives the best support via Twitter. The study found that good support is about more than being the fastest to reply. Just ask Virgin Media, which wasn’t the fastest like Sky Broadband but still did well.

It’s that time of the year again. Budget ISP TalkTalk has just confirmed that the standard price of its broadband and phone line rental service (outside of discounts) are set to rise once again from 1st October 2013, which will bring some of their costs into line with BT.

Customers taking one of TalkTalk’s broadband and phone bundles, which are currently being offered at half price or a discounted rate, can now add the up to 38Mbps Fibre Medium boost to their service free for the first three months (£10 thereafter) or the up to 76Mbps Fibre Large for £5 (£15 thereafter).

Broadband provider TalkTalk has confirmed that Chinese firm Huawei, which has recently suffered due to some high-profile concerns over state sponsored spying (here), now appears to be in full control of the ISPs network-level internet filtering service (HomeSafe) after US security firm Symantec stopped working on it over one year ago.

Budget internet provider TalkTalk has released its latest Q2-2013 results today, which saw them add another +8,000 broadband subscribers (down from 10k in Q1-2013) to total 4,071,000 customers. The number of consumers taking their Superfast Fibre (FTTC) product also grew by a steady +22k in the quarter to 95,000.

Ofcom has published the outcome from their latest mystery shopping study into fixed line ISP compliance with the regulators rules concerning how broadband speeds should be sold and communicated to consumers. Suffice to say that some providers (TalkTalk and O2) have fallen short of expectations but overall the market has improved.

The Post Office has finally begun its long awaited £500m migration from a BTWholesale / Logica based managed broadband platform and on to one that’s being delivered by TalkTalk Wholesale and Fujitsu (original may 2012 news). As a result a series of refreshed internet and phone packages have also been launched.

Yes it could be a story linked directly to your home laundry basket but it’s not. TalkTalk has today called in Ofcom to help settle a dispute with BTOpenreach, which has refused to supply a single jumpered solution with their fully unbundled (LLU / MPF) broadband and phone lines that could potentially save UK ISPs tens of millions.

Budget UK internet and phone provider TalkTalk has said that its “Superpowered Fibre Broadband” (FTTC) service, which offers speeds of up to 76Mbps, can now also be taken alongside a new phone line or migration via one engineer installation and one go live date.

UK ISP TalkTalk are offering double the internet usage allowances across their various mobile phone tariffs, including their current half price SIM-only options. As a result tariffs at the cheapest end, which previously included just 100MB (MegaBytes) of data, now come with 200MB and those that came with 2GB (GigaBytes) now get 4GB.

TalkTalk has today launched a new offer of 6 months free unlimited broadband and UK calls on their Essentials package (£6.50 a month thereafter). On top of that customers are also being offered their triple-play (broadband, phone and TV) Plus TV (YouView) bundle with a 3 months free TV Starter Boost (includes a bunch of Sky’s channels).

Some of the country’s broadband ISPs have told ISPreview.co.uk that Rights Holders are putting pressure on them to prevent their broadband customers from being able to access two extra website (EZTV and Yify-Torrents), which have both been accused of facilitating internet copyright infringement (piracy).

Following this week’s controversial meeting with the government’s culture secretary, Maria Miller, four of the United Kingdom’s biggest broadband ISPs (BT, Virgin Media, TalkTalk and Sky Broadband) have agreed to collectively commit £1 million over the next 4 years to “crack down” on the creation and distribution of online child abuse content.

Internet and phone provider TalkTalk has confirmed that its Plus and entry-level Essentials fixed line broadband products will no longer apply Traffic Management during peak times, which effectively makes the products “totally unlimited” instead of merely “unlimited“. Yes there’s a difference.

BT, Sky Broadband (BSkyB) and Virgin Media have all now confirmed that they plan to join TalkTalk (HomeSafe) in launching an automatic network level filtering service in the UK, which would block access to websites that contain “adult” content.
