Mobile operator Three UK has this week launched a new range of “Boundless Business” packages, which are said to offer unlimited calls, texts (SMS) and data (mobile broadband) SIM packs from just £5 +vat per month each (but you’ll need to buy ten or more of them to reach that price point).

Mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics has today published a new report that examines the mobile broadband download speeds and availability of 5G networks across EE, O2, Vodafone and Three UK in four recently tested cities during the first half of 2021 – Birmingham, Bristol, Coventry, and London.

Mobile operator Three UK has today issued a progress update on their various 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) network upgrades, which among other things reveals that they’ve now added their 1400MHz band to boost 4G speeds to over 1900 sites and have introduced a new anti-SPAM filter to protect text (SMS) messaging.

Mobile operator Three UK, which recently hit some customers with an inflation busting annual price hike of 4.5% (here), has now also begun to inform them that the price they pay for certain Outside of Allowance Calls and Additional Services will be going up sharply in price from 1st July 2021.

Ofcom has today set out the terms of reference for their future UK mobile strategy review, which will examine how the regulator can adjust their approach in order to improve 4G and 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) network connectivity for consumers and businesses over the next 5 to 10 years.

Ofcom has published their 2021 survey of UK broadband ISP and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaints and install times among the largest providers. Overall TalkTalk attracted the lowest satisfaction for broadband (77%), while Three UK did the same for mobile (86%). Generally, customer service has taken a COVID-19 hit.

Ofcom’s latest Q4 2020 consumer complaints report has today been published, which names and shames Vodafone for attracting the most gripes about fixed broadband and phone in the quarter, while iD Mobile and Three UK jointly did the same for Mobile and Virgin Media came bottom for Pay TV.

A new survey from Broadband Genie, which used a special tool to analyse and estimate the consumer stress levels of 344,243 tweets that were aimed at UK mobile operators, claims to have identified those that had the most stressed customers. Apparently, customers of iD Mobile are the most frustrated.

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published the final results from their recent £1.38bn auction of 5G friendly radio spectrum in the 700MHz and 3.6-3.8GHz frequency bands, which includes a few key changes from last month’s principal stage. Better mobile broadband coverage and speeds are expected.

Mobile operator iD Mobile (Dixons Carphone), which recently extended their existing Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement with Three UK (here), has now begun to make ultrafast 5G based mobile broadband connectivity available to their SIM Only customers at no extra cost. But initially only a very few Smartphones are supported.

The Government has today begun a consultation on their proposed changes to Permitted Development (PD) rights for mobile infrastructure, which seeks to extend 5G and 4G (mobile broadband) coverage in rural areas of England via key changes (e.g. allowing taller masts of up to 30 metres and softening planning permission).

The latest April 2021 Mobile Network Experience Report from Opensignal has measured the 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) performance of all four primary operators – EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three UK – to determine which delivers the best connectivity. Overall EE leads the pack, but it’s not a clear-cut victory in every category.

Mobile operator Three UK has today announced the appointment of David Hennessy to be their new Chief Technology Officer (CTO). The new chief will oversee the company’s major £2bn+ investment programme that aims to build “the UK’s fastest 5G network” for mobile broadband services.

Mobile operator Three UK has today kicked off what they’re calling the “Big Tech Giveaway,” which as the name suggests means that new customers taking one of their latest unlimited data (mobile broadband) tariffs and selected handset bundles will also receive a free gadget – ranging from smartwatches to smart speakers etc.

A new report from mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics has used the data they gathered for their previous H2 2020 study (here) to rank 16 of the United Kingdom’s largest and fastest cities by their average (median) download speed on 4G and 5G networks. Liverpool came top with an aggregate speed of 43.6Mbps.

Mobile operator Three UK today reports that they’ve “slashed” their 4G and 5G powered unlimited home broadband prices in order to help people who are stuck at home. Prices now start from as little as £17 per month for “superfast” 4G broadband, and £24 per month for “ultrafast” 5G – “with the average download speed of 100Mbps.”
