Planning is reportedly underway for the next phase of the UK Government’s £5bn rural Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme, which would see more public funding from the existing commitment being set aside to help reach digitally disadvantaged premises (remote and urban) that the initial scheme has so far been unable to tackle.

Liverpool-based network builder and UK ISP FACTCO has today confirmed that their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network has completed another rollout, this time for more than 450 properties in the Northumberland (England) village of Darras Hall.

Good news. Openreach has quietly re-opened their Fibre Community Partnership (FCP) scheme, which works with disadvantaged communities (e.g. rural villages) around England, Wales and Scotland to help co-fund the deployment of new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP networks.

The FTTH Council Europe has today released their 2023 ranking of the European countries with the strongest take-up and annual growth of gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP/H/B) broadband ISP networks. Once again, the United Kingdom continues to see exceptional growth (42% in homes passed) over the past year.

Rural broadband ISP GoFibre (BorderLink) has announced that they’ve entered the building phase of their Government state-aid supported £6.6 million Project Gigabit contract, which was awarded in September 2022 (here), to upgrade more than 4,000 hard-to-reach Teesdale premises in Northern England with 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology (Lot 4.01).

The seventh contract awarded under the UK’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme – worth “nearly” £14 million – has today been awarded to ISP Wessex Internet, which will upgrade connectivity for “around” 10,500 hard-to-reach homes and businesses across rural parts of the New Forest in Hampshire (England).

Most people tend to assume that the problem of slow broadband ISP connectivity is one that predominantly affects rural areas, which is matched by a presumption that commercial operators (Openreach, Virgin Media etc.) will quickly blanket big UK cities and towns with the fastest speeds. But such assumptions are not always correct.

The Government’s new National Underground Asset Register (NUAR), which is a digital UK map of underground pipes (water etc.) and cables (broadband, power etc.) that could help reduce accidental damage, has started to go live for several initial areas under its first deployment phase – covering North East England, Wales and London.

The Scottish Government has published a brief progress update on their £600m Reaching 100% (R100) project with Openreach (BT), which reveals that over 20,000 premises have now been covered by their rollout of a new “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) ISP network (inc. almost 3,000 connections also delivered via vouchers).

The National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) has published their annual infrastructure review, which highlights how the UK is making “rapid” progress in rolling out gigabit-capable broadband ISP networks and expects the Government to “achieve its target” for nationwide coverage by 2030. But 5G mobile still needs more direction.

The Scottish Government has published a new Public Review (PR) consultation for Scotland, which reveals that some 447,170 premises might need state aid help under the UK Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme in order to access 1Gbps speeds (rising to 1,281,434 if including ‘Under Review‘ premises).

Neos Networks has announced that their ongoing project to deploy a new gigabit-capable full fibre broadband network to over 175 public sector sites (councils, hospitals etc.) across Oxfordshire (England), many of which are in rural areas, is “on track” to complete by the end of 2023 – some 90 sites have already been reached.

The Powys County Council in mid-Wales has expressed “concerns” about a change to the UK Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband subsidy programme, which they fear could result in hard-to-reach households and businesses in the county being “negatively impacted“.

The Government’s Building Digital UK agency has published the results of their latest quarterly Rolling National Open Market Review (NOMR) process, which reveals that 2,866,478 premises across England are currently classed as being unlikely to get a gigabit-capable broadband ISP network within the next 3 years.
