Mobile operator Three UK has this morning announced that they’ve selected Ericsson to build their new cloud-native core network, which it claims will be the “largest in Europe” and one that will end up “more than tripling its core capacity” to 9Tbps (Terabits per second).

Customers of Sky’s TV (Sky Broadband) service, specifically those with their Sky Cinema plan, have been told that their included Paramount+ subscription will be “moved” to the lower value Paramount+ Basic (with ads) plan from 21st January 2025. Some customers will no doubt see this as a downgrade, given that the overall plan price remains the same.

Digital entertainment platform provider Netgem TV has today announced that their IPTV box and service, which is typically bundled by broadband ISPs like Brsk, TalkTalk, Connect Fibre, CommunityFibre and a few others, will benefit from a new partnership with Sports Studio that adds more than 40 free sports channels from its Free Live Sports streaming platform their TV Guide.

Some customers of Sky’s broadband-based Sky Stream TV devices (puck) have, over the past week, noticed the surprise addition of a new “TV Input” App that appears to activate the previously unused TV aerial port (tuner) on the back of the box – making it possible to add terrestrial Freeview channels via the old-fashioned method. But it may only be temporary.

Customers of budget internet provider TalkTalk, specifically those who take their Pay TV service, have had it confirmed that the ISP will be phasing out their single billing integration of Sky’s NOW TV streaming service (i.e. customers will no longer be able to add NOW TV Plans to a single bill from the ISP). Netflix integration was also removed last month.

Rochdale-base broadband ISP Zen Internet has revealed that they saw their busiest ever period for network traffic on 4th December 2024, when streaming of live Premier League Football caused usage on their network to peak at 17% higher than 2023’s record and 10% above the average for a typical December evening. This was a 4% increase over their previous record high in September 2024.

Customers of Sky’s broadband-based Sky Glass and Sky Stream pay TV streaming devices have finally got access to the provider’s new Ad-Skipping feature, which is an add-on pack that appears to have been introduced alongside Sky’s latest firmware update (e.g. QS34.022.00P on Sky Glass).

Broadband ISP Virgin Media has confirmed to ISPreview that, as a “festive treat for our customers“, they have temporarily opened up access to their Virgin TV Ultra HD (4K) channel (Ch 175 and Ch 999) to all their V6, TV360 and Stream customers at no extra cost until 1st January 2025.

Sky (Sky Broadband etc.) has this afternoon announced that they’ve signed an expanded partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery in the UK and Ireland, which means that existing Sky TV and NOW TV customers (e.g. Sky Glass, Sky Stream) will gain free (non-exclusive) access to the new ad-supported streaming service (app), Max (HBO Max), when it launches in 2026.

Sky (Sky Broadband, Sky Mobile etc.) has today announced the launch of their new entry-level Essential TV package, which includes some premium channels and also brings those together with Netflix and discovery+ content from just £15 per month. This is available via their internet-based Sky Stream and Sky Glass platforms.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced that customers of their pay TV service have just gained access to the new Paramount+ streaming App via their TV Box Pro and TV Box Mini hardware (set-top-boxes). This offers access to a wide selection of blockbuster movies and TV shows etc. But there’s a catch for those with a Premium plan.

Customers of Sky (Sky TV, Sky Broadband etc.) may like to know that the media giant has today announced an extension of their long-term collaboration with Amazon, which will see ‘Prime Video’ apps and related content continue to be available on Sky devices (e.g. Sky Q, Sky Glass, Sky Stream etc.).

The UK Government has today published an interesting new report examining the ‘Future of TV distribution‘, which among other things looks at the changing viewing habits and platform choices of modern TV viewers and then attempts to predict what will happen by 2040. The report also delves into the related issue of broadband ISP speeds and take-up.

The latest Q3 2024 results from Virgin Media (O2) have been published, which shows that they’re home to 5,726,900 fixed broadband customers (up by 16.2k in Q3 vs -12.2k in Q2) and expanded their full fibre (FTTP) network to 281,100 premises – primarily via nexfibre (down from 295k in Q2). VMO2 has also sold a minority 8.3% stake in Cornerstone (worth £186m).

Customers of UK ISP Virgin Media’s (O2) and certain pay TV, broadband, phone and or mobile bundles, primarily those that usually add their ‘Stream’ service, may have noticed that the provider renamed this from ‘Stream‘ to ‘Flex‘ this week. The change is partly cosmetic, but for new customers there’s now an extra £5 monthly charge.
