The UK communications and media regulator, Ofcom, has today published its Media Nations 2025 report, which reveals how linear TV viewing continues to decline in favour of broadband-based video streaming platforms (particularly YouTube and Netflix). But broadcast TV currently still accounts for the majority (56%) of in-home viewing (down from 57% last year).

The latest Q2 2025 results from Virgin Media and O2 today have revealed that their gigabit broadband network increased by 114,900 premises in the quarter to cover 18.53 million UK homes. But related customers suffered another fall to total 5,643,500 (down by -51.4k in Q2 vs -44k in Q1) and O2’s mobile base also suffered a fall (albeit with positive results in wholesale).

Ofcom has today warned that “traditional public-service TV is endangered” as more UK broadband users turn to online streaming platforms like YouTube. The regulator has thus published a new six-point action plan to tackle this, which includes urging broadcasters to make their content “easy to find and discover” on third-party platforms.

Digital entertainment platform Netgem TV has this morning announced that their IPTV box and service, which is usually bundled by broadband ISPs like Brsk, TalkTalk, CommunityFibre, Wightfibre and others, has expanded its range of FAST Channels to total 250 across the UK, France, Switzerland and Gibraltar.

Network benchmarking firm Ookla, which collects data from consumers via their popular broadband Speedtest.net website and App, have published the results of their Q1-Q2 2025 study into the video streaming performance of 5G mobile networks and awarded Vodafone the best on a score of 85.29 out of 100. But none of the operators performed particularly poorly.

Internet video streaming provider Disney+ (Walt Disney Company) has signed a new strategic agreement with British TV broadcaster ITV, which will enable both platforms to exchange TV and movie content between each other’s respective broadband streaming services (e.g. ITVX).

But it’s not all bad news.

Internet retail giant Amazon has confirmed that its modestly popular ad-supported Freevee service, which has been running for around 5 years and is described on app stores (Android/iOS) as being a “premium free streaming service“, is set to be completely shut down in August 2025.

As expected, Sky has today soft launched their new Sky Glass Air televisions for customers of their broadband-based pay TV streaming service, which is essentially a slimmed down version of their recently launched Gen 2 TVs (introduced February 2025). The new kit will become available to buy on Tuesday 10th June (Currys stores from 18th).

Struggling internet service provider TalkTalk is reportedly withholding millions of pounds from Sky (Sky TV, Sky Broadband etc.) due to a contractual dispute, which relates to fees owed for use of the media giant’s NOW TV video streaming service. The budget ISP had been offering this to customers until relatively recently (part of a bundle via a single bill).

Telecoms and broadband giant BT is reportedly in “advanced talks” to sell its 50% stake in UK TV broadcaster TNT Sports, which was formerly known as BTSport before the operator retreated from pay TV. Existing partner Warner Bros Discovery would pick up the stake and use it to help support their plans for a new streaming service (yes.. another one, sigh).

A new report from the cross-industry UK Spectrum Policy Forum (UKSPF), which was conducted in collaboration with consultancy firm Coleago, has examined what might become of the Ultra High Frequency (UHF) spectrum bands after 2034 (currently used for digital TV, PMSE and others). For example, if auctioned to mobile operators, the IMT600 band could raise up to £980m.
