Broadband and media giant Sky UK (Comcast) is reportedly engaged in “preliminary” talks over the possible £1.6bn acquisition of ITV’s broadcasting business, specifically the company’s Media and Entertainment divisions, which include both their free-to-air TV channels and the ITV X video streaming service.

Customers of Sky Glass, which uses your broadband and WiFi connection to stream on-demand video and live TV channels directly to Sky’s own brand TV sets (without a satellite dish), have been informed that if they also took out the £290 dedicated 4K HDR smart camera add-on (Sky Live) then this will shortly become an expensive paper weight.

The latest Q3 2025 results from Virgin Media and O2 have revealed that their FTTP broadband network increased its coverage by 139,300 premises in the quarter (up from 114.9k in Q2). Similarly, related customers grew to total 5,704,300 (up by 60.8k in Q3 vs -51.4k in Q2) and O2’s mobile base jumped by 419,400 in the quarter, while also doing a multi-year deal with Starlink for satellite mobile (Direct to Cell).

New customers looking to join Virgin Media (O2) should note that the ISP has just introduced some bigger discounts across some of their home broadband and bundle packages. For example, Virgin’s 1130Mbps (1Gbps) package is now just £29.99 per month on a 24-month minimum term (price increases to £33.99 from April 2026 and £37.99 from April 2027).

Broadband-based live TV streaming service Freely, which is supported by several major UK TV broadcasters (BBC, ITV etc.) and is an evolution – not (yet) a replacement – for the existing Freeview service (inc. Freeview Play and Freesat), has revealed that they’ll add 10 new streaming channels to the free platform in 2026.

British TV broadcasters Channel 4 and UKTV (U platform), which is owned by the BBC’s commercial division, have today announced a major new multi-year carriage agreement, which will see C4 gaining access to stream thousands of hours of additional free TV content and shows from the BBC via their online service (The Office, Red Dwarf etc.).

Mobile operator O2 has today announced that millions of their UK customers can now enjoy the TNT Sports TV content on the discovery+ streaming app at a discounted price via O2 Extras on a 30-day rolling contract (i.e. £26.99 per month instead of the usual £30.99), while at the same time saving an additional £2 per month off their Airtime bill.

The change introduces a new search feature and some smaller changes / fixes, but nothing major.

British-registered mobile operator Vodafone has today published a new white paper with Meta and Google, which shows the benefits of advanced video compression technology, via the AV1 video codec, for Smartphone users on their mobile broadband networks. But it also notes that many people use budget handsets, which often lack full support it.

Sky UK (Sky Broadband, Sky TV, Sky Mobile – Comcast etc.) has today begun notifying their workforce that up to 600 of them are likely to be made redundant by the end of this year, while around 300 more may be impacted by a wider business reorganisation. Many of those expected to be cut appear to come from Sky’s tech and networking teams.

The BBC’s Research & Development division has extended the testing period and increased the number of devices able to take part in their beta trial of “low latency streaming” on their iPlayer service. This aims to reduce the delay on live TV shows/events that exists between terrestrial broadcasts and streamed content.
