Broadband and mobile provider Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) has today signed a new partnership that will see them adopting Trustly’s “next-generation” Direct Debit account automation and one-off Pay by Bank solutions. The goal is to streamline payments and onboarding processes as part of the UK operator’s commitment to “making customers’ lives easier“.

After much debate, the UK telecoms regulator has today agreed to reduce the total amount paid by the primary mobile network operators – EE, O2 and Vodafone / Three UK – to use the 900MHz, 1800MHz and 2100MHz radio spectrum bands by around £60m per year. The bands support the use of 2G and 4G mobile (mobile broadband) services.

The UK Government has this morning revealed that a total of 30 publicly-funded rural 4G (mobile broadband) mast upgrades have now gone live across Wales as part of the industry-led £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project, which recently succeeded (here) in extending geographic 4G coverage from at least one operator to 95% of the UK (aggregate).

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) and UK tech charity Jangala have worked with the Newcastle City Council (NCC) to connect more than 1,000 local residents living in housing plus schemes at 30 different locations to a “free internet” service, which harnesses their special GetBoxes (a type of portable WiFi broadband router that uses mobile data).

Consumer magazine Which? has this morning named the winners of their Shoddy Awards 2025, which lists the companies that have done poorly through the year. The bad news is that broadband ISP Virgin Media was awarded a Shoddy for the third year running due to poor ratings and price rises, while EE picked up an award for its mid-contract price rises on mobile bundles.

Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today revealed that over the last 12-months they’ve upgraded the network capacity and coverage of their 4G and 5G mobile (mobile broadband) services at a total of over 2,000 postcodes across the West Midlands (England) city of Coventry.

Network benchmarking firm Ookla, which collects data from consumers via their popular broadband Speedtest.net website and App, have published the results of their Q1-Q2 2025 study into the video streaming performance of 5G mobile networks and awarded Vodafone the best on a score of 85.29 out of 100. But none of the operators performed particularly poorly.

The long-running saga of former high street mobile phone retailed Phones 4u (P4u), which fell into administration in 2014 and claimed that key mobile operators (e.g. O2, EE and Vodafone) had colluded to drive them out of business, may have finally come to an end after the Court of Appeal in London dismissed each ground of the case.

A new study from SignalTracker, which operates a popular Android-based mobile app for monitoring and examining mobile phone reception and performance (not available on Apple’s iOS), has named Vodafone as the best mobile operator in Central London for its balance of 4G / 5G coverage and mobile broadband speeds.

Customers of broadband and phone provider Virgin Media (O2), specifically those who take their pay TV service and continue to use one of the provider’s legacy TiVo set-top-boxes, have recently been informed – via email – that the BBC’s popular iPlayer service “will no longer be supported” from 23rd July 2025. The Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) and Neos Networks have today confirmed the completion of their £7.25m “GigaHubs” project, which has now connected 192 public sector sites (schools, hospitals etc.) to a new 1,500km long gigabit-capable full fibre broadband network.

Network testing firm Ookla, which collects data from consumers via their popular broadband Speedtest.net service, has published their Q1-Q2 2025 (H1) study into the speed of 5G based mobile broadband networks across the United Kingdom. The results reveal that Three UK continues to hold the top spot, followed by merger partner Vodafone.

The Institute of Customer Service (ICS) has today published their second biannual UK Customer Satisfaction Index for 2025 (July), which reveals that only one mobile and broadband (telecoms) provider made it into their table of the country’s top 50 organisations – Tesco Mobile (9th). But both Virgin Media and Utility Warehouse saw a big improvement.

The UK government yesterday revealed the time and date for its next major nationwide test of the Emergency Alerts service by mobile network operators, which will take place at “around” 3pm on 7th September 2025. This is normally only intended to be used if there’s a “danger to life nearby” (e.g. severe flooding, fires and extreme weather).

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK has blamed a “system error” for leaving one of its new customers without a working internet connection for nearly five months, which resulted in repeated failures to complete the installation via missed engineer appointments. But to make matters worse, the provider initially only offered £30+ worth of compensation for the trouble.
