A joint roll-out of Vodafone and Ericsson’s new portable mini base-station radio units (Ericsson Radio System), which are about half the size and weight of a standard radio unit that would usually need to be craned up a building, is being used to boost 4G mobile signals and data speeds around London.

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that their superfast 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband network is being extended to the remote island group of Orkney off the north-eastern coast of Scotland, with homes and businesses in Kirkwall (largest town of 9,000+ people) being among the first to benefit.

Vodafone UK has published their latest results, which show another increase in fixed line broadband growth by adding +20k customers in the quarter to total 109,000 (up from the +14k added in Q4 2015 and +5k in Q3 2015). Elsewhere UK outdoor 4G coverage has reached 84% (91% using Ofcom’s definition).

A new “all-industry coalition“, which represents alternative network providers and major UK players like Sky Broadband, TalkTalk and Vodafone, has today put pressure on Ofcom to deliver on its Strategic Review by publishing a plan that sets out how they think the regulator should deliver a better and more independent Openreach.

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that new or upgrading customers who take their Pay Monthly 12 – 24 month ‘Red’ and ‘Red Value’ mobile tariffs will be able to benefit from “worry-free inclusive roaming” across 40 destinations (mostly in the EU) and enjoy 4G in 93 destinations worldwide.

The UK telecoms regulator has today confirmed that they have “reasonable grounds” to believe that Vodafone’s sales and billing tactics for Pay-As-You-Go (payg) Mobile customers may have breached their consumer protection rules between 26th May 2011 and 28th September 2015.

A joint study from Which? and OpenSignal has revealed that actual coverage of 4G (LTE) mobile in the United Kingdom is poor, although EE (BT) managed to deliver the best 4G reach and Three UK came top for Mobile Broadband speed. But GiffGaff is still the highest rated by consumers.

Mobile operator Vodafone has today launched a new ’30 Day Network Guarantee’, which gives all new and upgrading consumers or small business mobile customers the chance to try their service for a month without being locked into a long contract (i.e. after 30 days you can leave “with no strings attached“, if you want).

Admittedly the opening title of Vodafone’s new survey of 2,000 British adults doesn’t make a lot of sense, “ONE IN FIVE BRITS WOULD RATHER GO WITHOUT GAS OR ELECTRICITY THAN BROADBAND” (broadband requires electricity to work). But get away from the headline and are there are some useful figures.

A new study has examined the 3G and 4G based Mobile Broadband performance of mobile operators O2, EE, Three UK and Vodafone across five major cities including Cardiff, Edinburgh, Liverpool, London and Norwich. Overall EE delivered the fastest Internet download and upload speeds in all cities, except Norwich.

The telecoms regulator has released their latest complaints report to the end of 2015, which reveals what mobile, TV, phone and broadband providers in the United Kingdom attracted the most consumer complaints. EE topped the naughty list for broadband, while TalkTalk dominated for fixed line phone gripes.

It’s fair to say that Vodafone’s return to the UK home broadband market has been a quiet one, much like their first failed attempt, and the plans to introduce a TV product alongside have yet to materialise. As such some may see the departure of Cindy Rose (Consumer Director) as a bad sign.

Consumer magazine Which? has this week published the outcome from their latest reader survey of broadband ISP satisfaction, which saw Zen Internet and Utility Warehouse win the highest ratings. Unfortunately the same could not be said for TalkTalk, which had the lowest score by far.

RootMetrics have put together a general report of all their mobile network testing for the past few months and revealed their pick of the top 16 cities (Larger Urban Zones) in the UK for mobile network performance, which saw Manchester top the table and Hull hit bottom. But caveats remain.
