Broadband provider BT has issued an update on the national UK rollout of their new Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) based Digital Voice product, which was “paused” in May 2022 (here) following complaints about service outages during power cuts etc. But the ISP now says this is “likely” to restart during the “spring of 2023“.

Openreach (BT) has today released the ‘Tranche 10’ batch of 32 UK exchange areas where they plan to move away from copper-based analogue phone (PSTN / WLR etc.) services and on to a new all-IP network, which will also occur once over 75% of premises in each area can get “ultrafast broadband” (FTTP and G.fast at 300Mbps+).

Cloud gaming ISP ZYBRE has today launched somewhat of a unique (or niche) new broadband and phone tariff to “help manage the cost of household bills“, which charges from just £5.99 per week for a download speed of up to 40Mbps on a “52-week contract” (12-month minimum term). There’s also a 0.5Mbps package coming.

Openreach (BT) has published the Tranche 9 batch of 65 new UK exchange areas where they plan to move away from copper-based analogue phone (PSTN / WLR etc.) services and on to a new all-IP network, which will also occur once over 75% of premises in an area can get their “ultrafast broadband” (FTTP and G.fast at 300Mbps+).

Ofcom has today opened a new monitoring programme, which will pay special attention to checking whether internet phone providers, such as those offered by dedicated Voice-over-IP (VoIP) and broadband providers (ISP), are ensuring the availability of access to emergency services (999) during power cuts.

Budget home broadband ISP TalkTalk appears to be getting closer to launching their own take on a Digital Voice (VoIP) product to replace analogue phone services, which will come alongside a number of connectivity options. One of those will also include the introduction of a new ‘Wi-Fi Hub 2‘ router.

Openreach will next month launch the UK ISP pilot phase of their new Single Order Transitional Access Product (SOTAP), which forms part of the withdrawal process for the old analogue copper telephone network. This will make it possible to offer a standalone ADSL broadband line, with optional phone services via VoIP etc.

Broadband ISP BT has paused the national UK rollout of their new Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) style Digital Voice product after complaints due to recent service outages. The service is designed to replace their old analogue phone service and is typically offered alongside broadband packages.

The Office of the Telecoms Adjudicator recently revealed that a “major” UK ISP had become the first to adopt the new ‘Right to Port‘ requirement for fixed line phones, which introduces some useful extra flexibility for phone users who want to switch (port) their number between operators. But none of the big players will confirm it.

Ofcom has today set out their final changes to the rules that govern the use of phone numbers in the UK, which has opted to retain the existing rules on geographic numbering and remove the obligation on telecoms providers and broadband ISPs to provide local dialling to customers.

Openreach made a somewhat comical gaffe this week after they told an end-user, who lives in a copper “stop sell” area and was trying to order a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband service, that the best way to resolve a problem with getting his UK address recognised was to “place an order for a telephone service only“.
