Openreach Start Enhanced Migration Pilot for Legacy UK Phone Switch-Off

Network operator Openreach (BT) has kicked off their first UK pilot to test the effectiveness of a targeted approach for safeguarding vulnerable customers during the mass migrations away from the old Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), which is due to be switched-off, in favour of a temporary alternative service.

Openreach (BT) has released the next May 2025 batch of exchanges (Tranche 20) in their “FTTP Priority Exchange Stop Sell” programme, which reflects areas where over 75% of premises are able to get full fibre lines and will thus stop selling copper based legacy phone and broadband products (i.e. FTTP becomes the only product option).

Study Claims UK Broadband Users Could Save £61.1m Monthly by Ditching Landlines

A new study from comparison site Go.Compare has claimed that broadband users who have a landline phone service included in their package could save as much as a combined £61.1m each month – across the UK – by switching to a non-landline deal (roughly £4.1 per month per user). Zen Internet Survey Claims 52 Percent of Brits Still Have a Landline

A new Censuswide survey conducted on behalf of UK broadband ISP Zen Internet, which involved 2,000 nationally representative UK consumers aged 16+ (surveyed during Q1 2025), claims to have found that 52% of Brits still have a landline, yet only 15% use it regularly. But only a third intend to take (or have already) the digital voice alternative when the switchover occurs.

A new report from the Digital Communities All-Party Parliamentary Group (DC APPG) has been published, which examines the ongoing industry-led switchover from Openreach, BT and KCOM’s legacy phone lines to new digital (IP / VoIP based) networks. But it warns that, despite recent efforts, vulnerable users still face a “risk to life” from the switch.

BT Warns One in Five Small UK Firms Still on “Analogue” Lines

Telecoms giant BT migrated 300,000 UK business customers away from legacy phone lines and on to digital broadband and phone solutions in 2024. But the provider claims that 22% of small businesses still see themselves as “analogue“, relying on tools like traditional landlines, paper contracts and fax machines, which must change before the old service is switched-off.
