Broadband Giant BT Bring UK Net Zero Target Forward to 2030

Telecoms giant BT (EE) has today announced that they’re bringing forward their target for achieving Net Zero by 15 years (i.e. removing as many carbon emissions as they produce), moving it from 2045 to 2030 for their own operational emissions. But their supply chain and customer emissions won’t follow until 2040.

Customers of both Voipfone’s UK business broadband and Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) services are reporting to ISPreview.co.uk that the provider has suffered significant service disruption for the past day or two, which appears to be at least partly the result of a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) assault against their systems.

Ofcom has today finalised their decision to force all UK broadband and phone providers – oddly including those that may not even deliver phone services – to offer a free (inc. zero-rated data usage), 24/7 video relay service for British Sign Language (BSL) users to contact the emergency services, via a dedicated mobile app and website.

Openreach (BT) has today taken the next step towards upgrading from analogue to digital services via the issuing of a “stop sell” notification in the trial area of Mildenhall (Suffolk), which means that new customers will now only be able to take all-IP (digital / VoIP) based phone and broadband services (no more analogue phones etc.).

Openreach Campaign Raises Awareness of Analogue UK Phone Retirement

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today launched a new national “Call Waiting List” campaign, which aims to raise awareness among UK businesses of their plans to withdraw old copper-based analogue phone (PSTN / WLR etc.) services by December 2025 and replace them with digital (IP / VoIP) alternatives.

Ofcom Will Stop Requiring UK Phone Providers to Offer Local Dialling

Ofcom has today launched a second consultation on the future use of UK telephone numbers, which among other things proposes to remove the obligation on phone operators to provide a “local dialling” facility (this requirement is less relevant on modern internet based networks) and to prohibit “cash for calls” schemes.

26 Percent of UK People Never Use their Landline for Phone Calls

A new Opinium survey of 2,001 UK adults, which was conducted in mid-March 2021 and commissioned by Uswitch, has revealed that 26% of people with a landline don’t even have a phone attached to it and 35% of respondents said they only have a landline because it’s needed for their broadband connection.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published a final statement on their latest Wholesale Voice Markets Review 2021–26 (WVMR), which among other things has set some new caps on call termination charges and deregulated other areas.

Ofcom Accepts BT Proposal to Continue UK Landline Only Discount

As expected, Ofcom has today accepted last year’s proposal from BT, which saw the UK ISP voluntarily offer to continue the existing discount that they apply to consumers who take a landline-only phone service (i.e. cutting the monthly rental from £18.99 to £11.99 for lines without broadband attached).
