Communications provider Clarus Networks has today announced that they’ve teamed up to use Starlink’s (SpaceX) global network of ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which will be used to help bring improved internet connectivity to ScotRail’s trains and related commuters across the highlands of Scotland.

Fixed wireless operator and broadband ISP Connexin has today called on the UK government to expand its focus beyond full fibre and 5G mobile by recognising Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN / LoRaWAN), which are often used to help connect small IoT style sensors and meters, as “critical infrastructure“.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published the final draft auction regulations for its plan to auction off a large chunk of millimetre wave (mmW) radio spectrum frequency in the 26GHz and 40GHz bands, which will be used by mobile operators to deliver faster 5G (mobile broadband) services – mostly in urban areas.

People travelling on the tourist focused Swanage Railway in Dorset (England), which is a heritage railway attraction that operates full-size steam and diesel passenger trains along the 5+ miles of line from Norden to Corfe Castle and down to the seaside town of Swanage, will soon gain access to onboard WiFi thanks to a new project.

The Scottish Government (SG) has revealed that nearly every home and business in Papa Westray, on the remote archipelago of Orkney, now has access to faster broadband speeds. This is after contractor CloudNet used the community-owned water authority’s existing infrastructure (pipes used for drinking water) to run new fibre optic cables.

The state-aid supported Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) programme has suffered yet another problem with one of their rural broadband contracts, which occurred today after they announced that their full fibre roll-out deal with Worcestershire-based Airband was being “scaled back” following its underperformance.

UK ISP BT has published the final biannual progress update for 2024 on their delivery of Ofcom’s somewhat maligned 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband. The ISP has so far helped to build a USO connection to over 8,248 premises (up from 7,954 in April 2024), with 215 further builds in-progress (down from 265).

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) and UK tech charity Jangala have this morning announced that, over the past year, they’ve provided more than 1,000 internet-enabling “Get Boxes” to charities and local authorities across the country, which are providing free WiFi hotspots to help thousands of people affected by “data poverty” to get online.

Abrdn-backed rural broadband ISP Airband, which has a network that covers rural parts of Wales and South West England via a mix of Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) and Full Fibre (FTTP) tech, has today become the “first operator in Europe” to deploy Tarana’s next-gen wireless (ngFWA) platform – offering “fibre-class speeds” of up to 400Mbps.

The site will be able to serve homes and businesses in rural parts of North East Aberdeenshire (Scotland) with 1Gbps+ broadband speeds.

Rural broadband ISP Voneus has today announced the completion of their effort to roll-out a new “Gigabit Wireless Broadband” (FWA) network across 4,700 homes on Walney Island in Cumbria (England), which they say took only 12-weeks to complete and is thus the “fastest ever deployed worldwide.”

Mobile network provider giffgaff, which is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) on O2’s platform in the United Kingdom, has announced the completion of their effort to deploy two long awaited new service features – Wi-Fi Calling and 4G Calling (VoLTE). This process originally began during the spring (here).

The Oldham Council in Greater Manchester has ordered broadband operator IX Wireless (supported by UK ISP 6Gi / Opus Broadband) to “temporarily … stop work across the borough” due to “safety concerns“. The operator had been deploying large metal masts for their fibre-fed fixed wireless broadband network, which has recently attracted protests.

The company that owns and manages most of the railway network in Great Britain, Network Rail, suffered a major service outage on their national Wi-Fi network this week, which began on Wednesday and impacted 19 stations. But it appears to have been caused by an “employee of Global Reach [who] corrupted the system“.
