A new Censuswide survey of 2,001 UK people (aged 16+) that have broadband, which was commissioned by UK ISP Zen Internet, has found 99% of respondents were unaware of all the factors that could be slowing down their WiFi and 76% didn’t know their neighbour’s broadband router may be hindering their own connection.

Broadband ISP Quickline, which runs a mix of Full Fibre (FTTP) and Fixed Wireless (FWA) networks across parts of Lincolnshire, Lancashire and Yorkshire in England, has signed a deal to boost their network by taking rack space in Proximity’s Nottingham data centre (edge colocation facility).

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association and Point Topic have published their 2022 report into the impact of alternative “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband networks, which reveals that such providers grew their UK cover by 111% in 2021 (up from 110% last year) to cover 5.46 million premises and could hit 11.6m this year.

Alnwick-based ISP Alncom has today announced that they plan to extend the deployment of their new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover a further 25,000 rural premises across parts of Northumberland, County Durham and the Scottish Borders.

Fifa-based ISP Transmitair, which specialises in rolling out gigabit broadband speed capable Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) networks to rural parts of Scotland, has revealed that they “intend to expand [their] network into England, Wales and Northern Ireland“, while also extending its base to include semi-rural and urban customers.

A new study of live data from nearly 3,000 ISPs around the world, which was conducted by remote Wi-Fi diagnostics firm RouteThis, has claimed that broadband users in the UK and Ireland are facing “significant connectivity issues“, despite increases in connection speeds, due to “device overload overwhelming bandwidth“.

Satellite broadband firm OneWeb, which is British-registered and partly owned by the UK Government, has today signed its first long-term distribution partnership agreement for the business aviation market with Gogo Business Aviation. Gogo’s service is widely used by a number of airlines for in-flight Wi-Fi, such as British Airways.

The City of London (CoL) is already home to a small cell based Wi-Fi and 4G network that claims to offer broadband speeds of up to 200Mbps across the Square Mile, but now Freshwave has been chosen to help deliver on the plan for a “city-wide deployment” that will push 5G coverage across the Square Mile by the end of 2022.

The latest research from Point Topic has found that world fixed broadband lines grew by 1.53% (19.247 million) in Q4 2021 to end the year on a total of 1.274 billion connections, while the quarterly growth rate of “full fibre” (FTTP/B) networks in the UK remained strong at 12.5% (albeit down from 14.8% in Q2 2021).

UK ISP BT has today issued their latest biannual study into the progress they’ve made toward delivering the 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband, which reveals that they’ve so far built a USO connection to over 4,600 premises, with more than 2,300 further builds in progress.

Some customers on Three UK’s 5G based unlimited Home Broadband packages, specifically those who recently joined and received the latest ZTE MC801A based 5G Hub router (here), have been reporting problems with connectivity and significant falls in broadband speed. The issue appears to stem from a bugged firmware update.

The UK telecoms regulator has today proposed to make a “large amount” of millimetre wave (mmWave) spectrum available across the 26GHz and 40GHz bands for use by mobile technology, including 5G services. Such bands could help to deliver multi-gigabit mobile broadband speeds, but achieving good coverage is a costly obstacle.
