Owners of UK ISP BT’s latest TV set-top-box hardware (TV Box Pro) for their broadband-based Pay TV (IPTV) service may be pleased to learn that they’ve added a new “internet mode“, which enables you to access TV shows, browse channels and apps all in one place, without the need for a TV aerial. BT also added a multiroom box.

Researchers at the Vienna University of Technology and the University of Rennes in Austria have found an interesting solution that could help WiFi signals from your local wireless network to more effectively penetrate through walls and boost coverage, which can be thought of as being similar to an anti-reflective coating on glasses.

Alternative network provider Quickline, which runs a mix of Full Fibre (FTTP) and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) based broadband networks across parts of Lincolnshire, Lancashire and Yorkshire in England, has today opened its new headquarters in East Yorkshire. The move is said to signal the start of a “huge expansion” for the company.

In a surprise development, new and existing customers who sign-up to one of Sky Broadband’s superfast, ultrafast or gigafast (FTTC, G.Fast or FTTP) powered internet access packages are now being given a “Wall to Wall WiFi guarantee” at no extra cost. Sky’s Wi-Fi Guarantee is normally only available as part of their paid ‘Boost’ add-on.

Scotland-based pureLiFi, which is developing the new Visible Light Communication (VLC) based networking method called LiFi (Light Fidelity) – using light instead of radio waves to transmit data – has informed us that the latest release of the Linux Kernel (v5.19) includes their LiFi drivers for the first time.

Quickline 5G SA ORan Launch Team

Full fibre and wireless broadband provider Quickline has teamed up with Mavenir to, they claim, become the first ISP in the UK to commercially deliver a cloud-based 5G Standalone (SA) Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) solution for Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) service in a Shared Access Spectrum licence.

Technology and network kit manufacturer TP-Link UK has today announced that they’re supplying WiFi and mobile broadband hardware to help support the Good Things Foundation’s aim of tackling the digital divide, which reflects the latter’s plan to set up 5,000 Digital Inclusion Hubs across the UK by the end of 2025.

Mobile operator Three UK has begun to notify customers that their indoor 3G femtocell based signal booster device and service (‘Home Signal‘), which harnesses an existing fixed line broadband ISP connection to create its own indoor 3G mobile signal over a specific band, is to be “retired” on 5th September 2022.

Some 300 homes across Scotland’s most westerly mainland point – the Ardnamurchan Peninsula – now have access to superfast broadband speeds of 35 – 100Mbps after local ISP Scotnet, supported by the government’s voucher scheme, deployed a new Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network to serve the area.

Derby-based communications provider E-volve Solutions has today revealed that it’s looking to expand their existing full fibre and fixed wireless access (FWA) broadband networks, which are currently focused on smaller firms in Derbyshire, to serve UK homes and other businesses in “rural areas” with “speeds up to 10Gbps“.
