The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed to make the upper 6GHz radio spectrum band (6425-7070MHz) available to Shared Access Licences for low-power, indoor use. But the move raises questions over the future use of this band to help improve 5G and WiFi performance, which has not yet been ruled out.

The North Lanarkshire Council in Scotland has announced that up to £150 million could be spent as part of an “initial” 15-year deal with ISP Commsworld, which will work to create lots of free public WiFi networks and to upgrade local public sector sites to gigabit broadband connectivity. Local homes and businesses may also benefit.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media / VMO2) has today pledged to extend their ultrafast 5G (mobile broadband) network coverage to reach 50% of the UK’s population in 2023 (not to be confused with geographic coverage). At the same time, they’ve also revealed that their 5G network already reaches 64% of London’s population.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), which represents UK alternative broadband ISP networks, has called on AltNets to help it by participating in a new survey assessing the development of the country’s independent networks.

Broadband ISP Quickline has today claimed to be the “first” company in the UK to offer Standalone 5G (SA) technology, which will be used to bring superfast and ultrafast broadband speeds to rural areas. The first services will offer speeds of up to 450Mbps, but there are “plans” to hit “gigabit capability” by summer 2022.

Rural UK ISP Wildanet, which last year started the £50m rollout of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network in Cornwall (here), has appointed Helen Wylde to be its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Virgin Media’s former COO, Paul Buttery, to join as Chair of the Board.

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published two new discussion papers that set out their “initial thinking” on how UK mobile markets might develop and how networks may need to evolve to meet future demand. But they do not currently propose any major new regulatory interventions or new consumer pricing rules.

The UK Government has today awarded £4m to support 8 new 2-year long pilots under the Digital Connectivity Infrastructure Accelerator (DCIA) project, which will test ways of making it easier for network operators to access and deploy 5G mobile (mobile broadband) infrastructure on street furniture and public buildings.

Broadband ISP GoFibre and rural fixed wireless ISP Marykirk.com have announced a new partnership, which will see the pair working together to extend a new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across approximately 1,500 homes in areas surrounding the town of Montrose – including Angus and South Aberdeenshire.

The government will today publish their “flagship” Levelling Up White Paper, which sets out their “plan to transform the UK by spreading opportunity and prosperity to all parts of it” and also confirms their revised broadband target – that “by 2030, the UK will have nationwide gigabit-capable broadband.”

The UK Spectrum Policy Forum, which acts as an industry sounding board for policymakers, has published a new report on how spectrum sharing could be improved to help provide innovative 5G mobile services. At present there’s a risk that the UK could lag behind other countries that “move faster on the introduction of automated sharing.”

A new multi-million pound data centre deal has today been signed between BT and BAI Communications, which is designed to support last year’s (here) agreement with EE and Three UK to deploy 4G and 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) services across the London Underground by late 2024 (ticket halls, platforms and tunnels).

Taiwanese fabless semiconductor company MediaTek claims to have conducted the “world’s first live demo” of the next generation Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) wireless networking technology, which is theoretically capable of peak data speeds up to around 40Gbps and “can be a true wireline / Ethernet replacement.”

Mobile operator EE has quietly confirmed that their indoor femtocell based signal booster device (‘Signal Box‘), which used an existing fixed line broadband ISP connection to create its own indoor 3G mobile signal over a specific band (e.g. 2100MHz), will be “fully closed” (for existing customers) by 30th June 2022.

The Public Accounts Committee has today issued a new report on the progress being made by the UK Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit rural broadband rollout programme, which questions whether it will meet its targets and criticises the project for “relying too heavily on commercial contractors for the progress that has been made.”

The first rural homes to benefit from faster broadband under Phase 4 of the Superfast North Yorkshire (SFNY) project, which reflects a partnership between NYnet, a North Yorkshire County Council-owned broadband company, and UK ISP Quickline Communications, have just gone live in the village of Picton.

Various sources have informed ISPreview.co.uk that broadband ISP BT is currently expected, barring any further delays, to launch their new Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) supporting Smart Hub 3 (SH3) router around July 2022. The new kit will also be accompanied by an updated Complete Wi-Fi 2 (CWF2) mesh system.
