Last year Virgin Media launched an invitation-only trial that gave “selected customers” of their broadband ISP and TV network a special discount on Plume‘s smart home Mesh WiFi system (here). Now parent operator Liberty Global has signed a new deal that seeks to expand the service to all customers.

The UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, is today reportedly gearing up to announce a fresh round of new capital investment in major infrastructure projects (HS2 etc.), which is expected to include a pot of £40 million to support pilots of superfast 5G based wireless (mobile) broadband in rural areas.

Broadband ISP BT has begun inviting some UK customers of their BT Mobile service to take part in a new London underground Wi-Fi trial, which will start mid-March 2020 and run for approximately 3 weeks. Those taking part will be given one month’s credit for the number they use (applied post-trial and subject to feedback).

The National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) has today warned in a new report that “inadequate” mobile (4G, 5G etc.) connectivity continues to be a big problem on the UK’s railways, which they blame on the government being “slow” to fix related gaps in connectivity due to a lack of leadership.

The latest report from Point Topic has revealed that global fixed broadband subscribers grew by 2.17% (23.6 million) in Q3 2019 to total 1.112 billion. During the past year copper (ADSL etc.) based lines fell by 7.7% while almost every other technology, particularly FTTH and fixed wireless connectivity, grew.

Fixed wireless and UK full fibre (FTTP) ISP Airband has made progress on their £11.2m Connecting Shropshire contract, which has so far expanded the reach of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) connectivity to 10,500 premises in the county and they now aim to deploy “ultrafast” (100Mbps) speeds to a further 2,200 premises.

Rural full fibre broadband ISP Gigaclear has today formally launched their new in-home Smart Wi-Fi “mesh solution” for customers, which harnesses the new Velop router from Linksys and makes it possible to easily extend the wireless network signal by adding a series of linked repeater nodes into the network.

We nearly overlooked this yesterday but Ofcom has proposed to enable greater access to around 18.2GHz of Extremely High Frequency (EHF) spectrum in the 100-200GHz range, which they feel could potentially be harnessed for very high speed data links, high precision industrial use (micro positioning of robots) or health screening etc.

The UK telecoms regulator has today proposed to free up 500MHz of spectrum in the 6GHz frequency band on a licence-exempt basis so that it can be used by the latest WiFi networks (e.g. Wi-Fi 6 / 6E – 802.11ax), which would make such networks faster, more reliable and a bit more secure.

The Wi-Fi Alliance has begun its campaign to nudge broadband and telecoms regulators from across the world to support their efforts to approve the 6GHz band for use alongside WiFi networks, which could in theory be introduced into the latest Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) standard alongside the Wi-Fi 6E terminology.

The Government’s £1.8bn Building Digital UK scheme has now helped to extend “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) ISP networks to 5,198,436 extra UK premises since 2012/13 and the latest take-up data to September 2019 shows demand from consumers continues to climb, reaching just over 70% in some counties.

BT has today announced a new deal that will see them bring all 494 of InLinkUK’s smart WiFi kiosks under their full ownership, which follows last weeks news (here) that the company created to deploy and manage the kiosks alongside BT, Intersection and advertising firm Primesight – InLink Limited – had called in the administrators.

As expected EE (BT) has today announced that they will next year be joining O2, Vodafone and Transport for London (TfL) to help pilot a new 4G (mobile broadband and voice) network through tunnels and at station platforms on the London Underground (tube trains).

Residents in the tiny rural Monmouthshire village of Llanddewi Rhydderch in Wales now have a second 1Gbps capable speed option for broadband in the form of a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which is intended to complement their existing Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) trial. But another 50 villages could soon join them.

Mobile operator O2 UK has today confirmed that they will work with Transport for London (TfL) to pilot a new 4G (mobile broadband and voice) network through tunnels and at station platforms on the London Underground (tube trains). The operator will join Vodafone, which reached a similar agreement with TfL a couple of months ago.
