A team of international scientists working out of Lancaster University in England have officially kicked off a new consortium called TWEETHER, which aims to harness the millimetre wave (mmW) radio spectrum (specifically 92-95GHz) in order to develop a new wireless network that could offer economical broadband connectivity with a capacity up to 10Gbps (Gigabits per second).

Relish, a London-based and focused 4G fixed wireless superfast broadband ISP, has continued to highlight the high cost of landline phone rental by claiming that 30% of UK adults do not know how much they are spending on their landline and estimate their monthly expenditure at £11.39 (well below the £16.77 average of the big ISPs).

Diamond Resorts International has signed a new contract with The Cloud (Sky) to roll-out an expanded network of WiFi hotspots for members, owners and guests at six of its resorts in the United Kingdom by the end of this year.

UK ISP Call Flow Solutions, working as part of the Government’s £10 million Innovation Fund pilot(s), has finally started to deploy a new fixed wireless superfast broadband network to help serve communities in the most rural parts (i.e. final 5%) of Hampshire (Southern England).

The Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project in England has successfully raised an extra £700,000 to help roll-out “superfast fibre broadband” (although curiously the speeds are stated as sub-superfast “up to 24Mbps“) across hard to reach communities in the Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks.

One problem with BT’s recently completed and state aid supported £26.9m subsea fibre optic roll-out project (here) for Scotland’s Western Isles is that not everybody on those islands will benefit from the new connectivity. As a result a new community project has been established to fill in the gaps.

Customers of TalkTalk’s home broadband service can now download a new Talk2Go app for Android and iOS (iPhone etc.), which allows them to make and receive calls (i.e. using their landline minutes) whilst out and about on 3G or 4G based mobile broadband or over Wi-Fi connections (charged at the same rate as if they were at home).

Customers of Relish’s new superfast 4G (LTE at 3.5 / 3.6GHz) based fixed wireless broadband service in central London, which offers an “unlimited” connection with Internet speeds of up to 50Mbps from just £20 per month (no line rental required), have continued to complain about frequent connection drops and unresponsive support.

Competition between smaller alternative network ISPs is rare because they tend to keep out of each other’s way. But that’s not always the case and is proven by WarwickNet’s move to start rolling out a new fibre optic broadband network to businesses on Derby’s (East Midlands, England) Pride Park, which comes shortly after ITS Technology announced a new fixed wireless network for the same area.

Various rural parts of North Lincolnshire (England) are starting to benefit after fixed wireless broadband ISP Quickline began making use of around 30 local churches and village halls in order to deploy their so-called “AIRFibre” service, which offers Internet download speeds of up to 8-15Mbps (uploads of up to 10Mbps).

Supermarket giant Tesco has moved to paint over some of their financial troubles by announcing that customers who shop in their Tesco Extra or Superstores across the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland will now be able to get online via premium WiFi hotspots from BT.

A circular advert for TalkTalk’s broadband package has been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) for being “misleading” after it claimed that the ISPs new Super Router device was able to offer subscribers “unbeatable signal strength” and the “UK’s fastest Wi-Fi technology.” Oops.
