New research from Point Topic has revealed that world fixed broadband lines grew by 1.87% (24.59 million) in Q3 2022 to end the quarter on a total of 1.34 billion connections. But the subscriber growth rate of “full fibre” (FTTP/B) networks in the UK appears to have slowed in recent quarters.

The company behind fixed wireless broadband ISP Bluewave (Bluewave Communications Cymru), which serves rural premises across parts of Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire in Wales with claimed download speeds of “up to” 40Mbps for £29.99 per month, has this month entered voluntary liquidation.

The Cheshire East Council in England has announced that UK ISP Airband has so far covered 3,000 extra premises with their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which forms part of a £4.5m state aid supported contract that was signed back in January 2021 (here) under the Digital Cheshire programme.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today issued an update on its position with respect to whether the upper 6GHz radio spectrum band (6425 to 7125MHz) should be released for use by either higher-power licensed 5G mobile networks (mobile broadband) or lower-power Wi-Fi (e.g. home WiFi).

Rural-focused UK broadband ISP Airband, which is deploying a mix of Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) and Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) networks across various parts of the country, appears to be suffering some problems in the Shropshire and Herefordshire (England) areas after customers reported a sharp drop in speeds.

The UK-based communication solutions provider World Mobile appears to have successfully piloted one of the first Starlink (SpaceX) powered distributed WiFi networks in the UK, which is being used to share low latency broadband speeds of up to 400Mbps across a remote caravan site in Wales.

Blackburn-based network operator IX Wireless, which is building a new fixed wireless broadband network for UK ISP 6G Internet (not related to 6G mobile technology), has been hit with a small fine in the Greater Manchester market town of Bury (specifically the suburb of Brandlesholme) after they built unauthorised digital infrastructure.

The South Western Railway and telecoms firm Evo-rail (FirstGroup) recently announced the people travelling on a 70km long stretch of their Main Line into London – between Basingstoke and Earlsfield – would be the first to benefit from the rollout of new rail-side 5G poles (masts) that will be used to deliver “superfast” onboard WiFi.

Alnwick-based broadband ISP Alncom has announced that they’ve secured enough funding to be able to expand the coverage of their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across 50,000 premises in the North East of England (up from 25,000), with a focus on Northumberland, County Durham and the Scottish Borders.

UK ISP BT has issued the latest biannual October 2022 update on the progress they’ve made in delivering the 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband, which confirms that they’ve so far built a USO connection to over 5,900 premises (up from 4,600), with more than 2,000 further builds in progress (down from 2,300).

Some 40 homes on the remote Scottish Isle of Coll, which is home to around 200 people, have been left without broadband until at least Monday because Openreach’s engineers cannot safely reach the island by boat in order to repair their niche Wireless-to-the-Cabinet (WTTC) network. Some homes have now been offline for 3 weeks.
