Kent-based fixed wireless ISP VFast has become the latest internet provider to be hit by rodents with a seemingly insatiable appetite for fibre optic cables. In fact for almost a month the pesky critters have been busily attempting to nibble their way through one of BT’s key fibre spine cables in Canterbury, which supplies VFast.

The government’s Broadband Delivery UK office has released new guidance for local authorities on the use of state aid (public funding) in support of deploying NGA fixed wireless access (FWA) networks. The guidance, much like existing EU rules, makes it possible for wireless ISPs to engage in the process but only under strict conditions.

Cisco’s latest forecast has predicted that online video services will represent 66% of global Mobile Broadband traffic by 2017 (up from 51% in 2012), which will help to push total mobile data use from 0.9 Exabytes per month (i.e. 885 Petabytes) now to 11.2 EB in just five years’ time and outpace global fixed data traffic.

Rural homes and businesses in western Kent (England) look set to benefit after two ISPs, Gigaclear and Call Flow Solutions, confirmed that they were separately aiming to improve broadband internet services to a number of overlapping local villages surrounding the town of Sevenoaks. BT Retail has today announced the launch of its new SmartTalk (BTSmartTalk) app for Apple iPhone and Android mobiles. The app requires a wifi or Mobile Broadband connection and enables customers to make phone calls via their smartphone and have them billed under their existing home phone plan (whether in the UK or abroad).

The IEEE Standards Association (IEEE) has officially approved the new 802.11ad (802.11ad-2012 amendment) standard that will provide short-range wifi wireless networking (WLAN) speeds of up to 7Gbps (Gigabits per second) by using the unlicensed 60GHz radio spectrum band (typically 57-66GHz).
