BT WiFi has announced that its UK network of 4.5 million public wireless internet hotspots saw a record usage rise on New Year’s Eve as wifi users’ online minutes jumped 317% on last year and physical data consumption grew by 260%. The network also saw 88% more unique users than at the same time last year.

The Northumberland County Council (NCC) in North East England has announced the launch of a new £1.3 million loan scheme that has been designed to encourage small satellite, wireless or other alternative technology ISPs to come into the county and offer their broadband services to the most remote rural areas.

Ofcom UK has today proposed a new framework to support the future use of White Space (IEEE 802.22) based wireless broadband technology on a licence exempt basis.
