The state aid fuelled Superfast South Yorkshire project, which is working with Openreach (BT) to deploy “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) to 97.9% of premises by the end of 2017 (Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield), has been hit by the collapse of a “main subcontractor” and “national planning issues.”

Over the past two years we’ve heard plenty of debate about the Government and BT’s proposed plan for a legally-binding 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation for broadband, although there’s been very little talk about KCOM’s position in Hull and East Yorkshire, where they dominate the local market.

Customers of KCOM in Hull (East Yorkshire) can now order a new range of broadband-only packages, which cost about 30% less than their standard price and claim to be “flexible plans” that “let you pick your data [allowance] and add a landline only if you need it.” But that’s not all..

A little known Bradford-based ISP called net365, which supplies broadband services to students, as well as residential, healthcare and business users, appears to have cut-off some or all of their internet access customers following an alleged dispute with one of their suppliers (FluidOne).

Calculus Capital, which specialises in Enterprise Investment Schemes and Venture Capital Trusts, has made a second investment of £2 million into Doncaster-based ISP Origin Broadband. The new money will be used to help grow the business (i.e. attracting more customers and adding extra UK staff).

The UK telecoms regulator has hit KCOM, the incumbent telecoms and broadband provider for Hull in East Yorkshire, with a fine of £900,000 after “a serious weakness” in their network resulted in 74 calls to the emergency services failing after a BT telephone exchange in York flooded during Storm Eva.

The plucky rural ISP B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North), which has been deploying their 1Gbps community built and funded fibre optic (FTTP/H) broadband network to remote homes in Lancashire, Cumbria and Yorkshire, has now connected 3270 properties and is expanding into Suffolk and Norfolk.
