The incumbent ISP for Hull (East Yorkshire), KCOM, has today announced the next areas (approximately 10,000 premises) to benefit from the on-going rollout of their “ultrafast” (Gigabit capable) Lightstream pure fibre optic broadband (FTTP) network.

So far KCOM has already expanded their Lightstream service to cover more than 164,000 premises in the East Riding and Hull area, with 67,000 subscribing (including 3,500 businesses). Most of these have been catered for via their ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) lines, which offers download speeds of up to 400Mbps to local homes and 1Gbps (1000Mbps) to businesses.

The operator is now working to extend this to reach 100% of their addressable network area by March 2019 (around 200,000+ premises), which is costing them around £85 million. On completion it’s estimated that 96% of their network coverage will be via FTTP “full fibre” and the remaining 4% should be catered for by slower 75Mbps capable FTTC (VDSL2).

The latest rollout phase (10,000 premises) will be delivered between now and the end of August 2018, adding roughly 2,200 properties in the Hessle area, 1,800 around Anlaby Road, 2,400 in Beverley Road, nearly 900 in the Boulevard area, 1,100 in Sculcoates, more than 400 in Bransholme and a further 600 properties in the Newland Park area.

Cathy Phillips, KCOM’s Chief Marketing Officer, said:

“We are delighted that our Lightstream rollout is continuing at pace and we’re reaching thousands of new properties every month with our UK-leading full fibre broadband.

We’re now well on the way to completing the final leg of our Lightstream deployment and bringing the benefits of ultrafast broadband to all four corners of our network.”

Recently KCOM informed us that some 54% of their total broadband customer base was now taking a “fibre” service, which rises to 64% in fibre-enabled areas.
