Cable ISP Virgin Media has continued their piecemeal announcements by revealing that 10,000 premises in Cleckheaton (Kirklees, West Yorkshire) will be the next to benefit from the expansion of their cable TV and 350Mbps capable broadband network, which forms part of ‘Project Lightning‘.
Overall the £3bn project aims to reach an additional 4 million premises across the UK by around the end of 2019 or 2020, which should extend their overall coverage of “gigabit-ready lines” (they’ll need to add DOCSIS3.1 and boost capacity again for that) to roughly 60%+ of the country (17 million premises). Apparently the work in Cleckheaten is already underway, with completion expected by the end of 2019.
Hugh Woolford, VM’s Regional Director, said:
“Families and small businesses across Cleckheaton will soon be benefiting from our brilliant ultrafast broadband service. Giving them greater speeds will enable them to do the things they need to do and love doing more quickly and more easily.”
Once again we can only plead with Virgin Media to publish a much fuller roll-out plan, as opposed to the current drip feed of information.
Nice more installs for me to do
No surprise to the locals. VM have had the town ‘under seige’ for several months now. The construction seems quite ‘heavy-handed’ for the small-bore micro-duct being used, and many homes have been either blocked-in or had one-way traffic systems for several days. Not sure why micro-trenching has not been used.
Does anyone know if this work will include Gomersal?
has anyone had their property or CARS damaged by the contractors cutting holes, cars covered in dust, and stones from the cutters hitting and causing chips in cars.
contact your councillor, to complain, we can then compile a list or go on facebook, cleckheaton page.
