Customers of KCOM’s broadband ISP in Hull (East Yorkshire, UK) can now choose from a new range of bundles, which give subscribers the choice about how much data, calls or download speed (up to 400Mbps on FTTP) they’d like to add (as opposed to picking from the usual pre-selected bundles).
Homes covered by KCOM’s new Lightstream broadband platform, which reaches roughly 75% of the operator’s network area (150,000 premises and this should reach 100% by March 2019), can also pick from package speeds that go up to 400Mbps. The majority of this roll-out uses their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology, although around 4% of premises may only be able to access the slower 75Mbps FTTC (VDSL2) service. Outside of that the rest can only get sub-20Mbps ADSL2+.
Cathy Phillips, KCOM’s Chief Marketing Officer, said:
“Our new range of home broadband packages gives customers maximum choice and flexibility when it comes to choosing an internet service that’s right for them.
By choosing the speed and data they need for their internet usage – whether that’s online gaming, watching Netflix or just checking social media – householders can tailor their services to meet their specific needs so they’re only paying for the services they value.
We want to make it easy and affordable for everyone to get online.”
All customers can expect to receive a “free” wireless router (subject to a £6.49 delivery fee), 18 month contract term, included access to KCOM’s public WiFi network in Hull, free technical support and a £50 one-off connection fee also applies to all Lightstream products unless otherwise stated (currently reduced on some packages to £25).
The cheapest ADSL2+ package with 20GB of data and standard call rates start at £22 per month, which rises to £60 per month for the top 400Mbps (35Mbps upload) tier with unlimited usage. Sadly upload speeds are not mentioned and the price rises if you add extra calling services.
Any incline as to when they will update there roll-out page? they announced the area’s months ago but still no roll-out page update even though everything bar 1 location is Live Now.

FTTH Packages,
30/15 (don’t see it on the website)
75/20
200/35
400/35
Nice to see an upload speed increase across the range (some were previously 5 Mbps)
What’s interesting is they appear to have changed what they previously referred to as Committed Information Rate (CIR) and replaced it with Minimum Access Speed, however I’m not 100% sure they refer to the same thing – maybe it’s to stop people getting out of the contract because they were not getting the line speed over WiFi or something?
Across the range of packages except the 30/15 one it’s 50/30.
Previously the 250/30 package (they also briefly had 350/30 a month ago) http://pricing.kcomhome.com/media/1370/p26-s13_lightstream_ultrafast_bundles.pdf had a CIR of 250/30 i.e. they committed to never slowing it down.
It’s possible it’s just to allow them to oversell the capacity more, GPON at 400Mbps could be saturated by 2.5Gbps/0.4Gbps = 7 users.
