The future of YouView’s broadband based TV (IPTV) platform, which has recently come under pressure from a similar Freeview Connect proposal, has been given a boost today after the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, BT, TalkTalk and Arqiva, as equal shareholders, all agreed a guarantee of funding for “at least” the next 5 years.

Marc Watson, CEO of the BT TV Group and one of the architects behind the operator’s storm into the United Kingdom’s broadband-based Pay TV market, has announced his decision to leave the telecoms giant in pursuit of a “fresh challenge“. The announcement comes before the next round of a battle with BSkyB over ownership of TV sporting rights.

Budget communications provider TalkTalk has reduced the price(s) of their triple-play Essentials TV and Plus TV (YouView) broadband bundles to £5 and £10 per month respectively for the first 6 months of service (£7.50 and £15.50 thereafter). A £50 Love2Shop voucher has also been included.

Customers of BT’s YouView (IPTV) and broadband powered TV service have today been introduced to a much smaller version of their set-top-box (DTR-T2100) device (partly because it doesn’t need a fan), which adopts a similar style to the operators Home Hub 4 and Home Hub 5 routers. But still no built-in WiFi connectivity.

Who needs YouView (IPTV) anyway? The BBC, Channel 4, ITV and Digital UK appear to be considering a third bash at the Internet based catch-up TV game (aka – Freeview Connect) after their last attempt, YouView, ended up becoming more of a commercial customer retention tool for the big broadband ISPs (e.g. TalkTalk and BT).

The United Kingdom’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has kicked off 2014 by upholding a variety of complaints against “misleading” adverts for broadband and other services supplied by Sky Broadband (BSkyB), AOL Broadband, TalkTalk, Virgin Media and separately also YouView’s (IPTV) platform that some of the big ISPs use.

As expected PlusNet has started to move forward with its plans to launch a YouView (IPTV) based TV product to their UK broadband customers by opening up the closed staff trial to existing customers with an Unlimited Fibre (FTTC) package.

BT and Universal Music haven’t given up on their long held plans to launch an Internet-based music streaming service and indeed one is about to be introduced, albeit at a cost of £3 extra per month (FREE to their TV Unlimited customers).

BT’s recently launched BTSport TV service, which airs premium sport matches for free to their own broadband subscribers and at cost to others, has scored another major coup against Sky (Sky Broadband) and ITV after it gobbled up the exclusive broadcast rights to all 350 matches from the 2015 – 2018 UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League (football).

BTOpenreach has announced that its GEA Multicast product, which is a point-to-multipoint network layer service that enables operators to deliver IP data streams (e.g. IPTV traffic) more efficiently to their customers, will finally become a full commercial product on 25th November 2013.

Budget ISP TalkTalk has officially introduced its new triple-play Essentials TV (phone, broadband and television) bundle today, which at £7.50 per month has managed to carve out a small space between their £2.50 SimplyBroadband and £10 Plus TV services. The primary difference appears to be in the free calls and budget YouView (IPTV) set-top-box.

Customers of PlusNet’s broadband service should soon gain access to the BTSport TV service but it’s not being offered for free and oddly it only appears to be available over the Sky Digital TV (satellite) platform.

In an effort to pull in more subscribers BT’s consumer division has today announced that its new BTSport TV service, which is usually offered for free alongside their various home broadband and phone packages, will become available to EVERYONE with Freeview, BT TV, Sky TV (Sky Broadband) or Virgin Media TV for several weeks this month.
