Pure fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic has today confirmed that their 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network is now live in the South Yorkshire (England) city of Sheffield, with two developments in the city centre being the first to benefit (Pearl Works and Mandale House).
The city is one of twelve on the provider’s current roll-out plan, with others including London (this is where they have the most coverage), Glasgow, Cardiff, Bristol, Reading, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Birmingham and Newcastle.

The ISP generally focuses upon connecting larger buildings (e.g. Multi-Dwelling Units with at least 50 units) or big office blocks where the local demand is deemed to be strong enough for them to invest.
Tim Huxtable, Hyperoptic’s National Team Manager, said:
“We announced last October that we had chosen Sheffield as one of our first hyper-cities. Since then we have been working hard implementing the infrastructure and engaging developers and building owners to schedule installation. We have experienced amazing demand from the residents of Sheffield so we are thrilled to be satisfying it and bringing them world-class broadband speeds. Sheffield is a strategic city for Hyperoptic; we will be investing millions over the next couple of years.”
A number of other developments are also undergoing installation in Sheffield and Hyperoptic hopes to have many more connected by the end of 2015, while their medium-term UK plan is to cover 500,000 premises by 2018 (they currently reach well over 100,000).
