Confusion as Starlink Remove £10 Monthly Kit Fee for UK Broadband Service

The ever-changeable packages and pricing of Starlink’s (SpaceX) satellite-based ultrafast broadband service took yet another twist just before the weekend. The provider suddenly seemed to drop the extra £10 per month charge for hardware rental (dish, router etc.) with new customers, which was somewhat sneakily introduced last month.

The service currently has around 10,840 satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) – mostly at altitudes of between c.340-550km. Residential customers in the UK currently pay from £40 a month for the Residential 100Mbps unlimited data plan, which also promises uploads of c.15-35Mbps and low latency connectivity (c.20ms). Faster packages exist at greater cost, while more restrictive (data capped) options also exist for roaming users (e.g. £55 per month for 100GB of data).

NOTE: Starlink’s network currently has 12 million customers (up from 6m in July 2025). The service had 110,000 customers in the UK as of July 2025 (up from 87,000 in 2024) – mostly in rural areas.

However, since early June 2026 (here) the operator had also imposed a £10 monthly rental charge for their residential hardware, which at the time felt like a sneaky price hike because Starlink were continuing to advertise their entry-level residential packages as being priced from £40 per month (in reality it actually should have been £50pm with the hardware rental included).

At present Starlink is rapidly becoming known for a persistence of price and product volatility, which makes it increasingly difficult for customers to know whether the service they’ve signed up to will remain that way for an acceptable period or time or change on them again at any given moment. Starlink’s lack of any credible media team also makes it incredible difficult to know what their rationale is for such changes.

A little price and product stability for a good period of time wouldn’t hurt. Suffice to say, Starlink will probably find a way to change all of this again in a few weeks’ time, especially with new terminal hardware on the way.

One of the many problems of monopolies. Some proper competition from the upcoming Amazon product will sort this out.

Nice thought, but it won’t change anything in the short- or medium-term. Starlink will do Starlink, no matter who else comes along. And Amazon will take a while to get anywhere near the level required for proper competition.

If Bezos’s satellite provided internet service goes as smoothly as his Blue Origin venture, then we should see some strong competition somewhere circa the 2150s…

Is the lack of a coms team the reason starlink
Routers are only ever good, better, best all without declaration of what differentiates them.
