Public UK WiFi Hotspot operator The Cloud, a BSkyB company, has confirmed that it will bring free wireless internet access to all 56 of London’s Overground stations (suburban rail network), with the first 12 going live by the end of 2012.
The move is similar to Virgin Media’s plan to deploy an almost identical service to 120 underground tube station platforms in London (here), although their free service will cease after the 2012 Olympic Games. By comparison The Cloud’s solution will remain free, albeit only for the first 60 minutes of use (after that you’ll need to pay for more).
Steve Murphy, MD of London Overground’s Operations, said:
“Access to the internet is no longer limited solely to home or to the workplace, and people’s expectation is to be able to work and communicate effectively and seamlessly while they’re on the move so we’re delighted to support this initiative which will bring reliable, free WiFi to London Overground’s customers.”
According to The Telegraph, the first 12 stations to benefit are – Willesden Junction, West Hampstead, New Cross Gate, Forest Hill, West Croydon, Norwood Junction, Surrey Quays, Dalston, Wapping, Hackney Central, Kensington Olympia and Shepherd’s Bush.
