Cable ISP Virgin Media UK has started the roll-out of its latest £110m national network upgrade (original news), which at no extra cost (assuming you choose to ignore Virgin’s recent price hike) aims to at least double its customers broadband speeds (except on their ADSL2+ based Virgin.net / Virgin National platform).
The first customers were upgraded this week and the full deployment is expected to take a whopping 18 months (completion is due by the middle of 2013).
Planned VirginMedia Download Speed Upgrades
* 10Mb increased to 20Mb [2Mbps Uploads]
* 20Mb and 30Mb increased to 60Mb [6Mbps Uploads]
* 50Mb increased to 120Mb [12Mbps Uploads]
* 100Mb increased to 120Mb [12Mbps Uploads]
Some 1.5 Million cable homes are expected to be upgraded between March and April 2012; starting with Newcastle, Ashford, Ipswich, Dundee, Belfast and Cambridge. Further details can be found here: www.virginmedia.com/doublespeed.
Jon James, Virgin Media’s Executive Director of Broadband, said:
“Virgin Media has driven broadband development in the UK and we’re delighted to be boosting our customers’ broadband speeds once again. Following our Double Speeds programme, all of our customers will be ‘superfast’ as standard and ready to access a new breed of high bandwidth entertainment services. By continuing to give our customers faster speeds and greater value services, we’re committed to providing our customers the best broadband in the UK.”
One additional exception to this remains Virgin’s latest 100Mbps package, which is still being rolled out (due mid-2012) and will thus only receive a more casual boost to 120Mbps. Happily Virgin Media has promised some form of “price reduction” for related customers.
