Several internet providers are reporting that BT’s core 21st Century Network (21CN) and related broadband services have suffered a major loss of service in central London and the surrounding areas.
At the time of writing there’s not much to go on, although BT are describing it as a “Serious Incident” that is affecting their 21CN Wholesale Broadband Connect (WBC) services to multiple ISPs. The situation appears to be centred on the operators Faraday telephone exchange.

The problem is believed to have started at around 11am today.
UPDATE 22nd June 2012
The problem, which hit a large number of people in the southeast of England and was caused by an unspecified equipment failure, was finally resolved last night. A separate equipment failure also affected services in Sheffield and that too has now been resolved. As usual some customers might need to reboot their router to reconnect.
BT Statement
Support teams have applied a fix to the network equipment and we are now able to confirm that full broadband services have been restored to all of our customers. Extensive monitoring will continue and this is to ensure stability of the service.
