Gigaclear and sibling ISP Rutland Telecom have completed the three month long build of a new 1000Mbps (Megabits per second) capable fibre optic broadband (FTTP) network in the rural market town of Uppingham (Leicestershire, England), with prices starting at £37 a month for a symmetric 10Mbps package (£100 installation).
Uppingham is already served by a Sub-Loop Unbundled (SLU) based broadband ADSL2+ service and a free wireless internet (Wi-Fi) hotspot that covers the town centre, which was originally installed by Rutland Telecom. But locals were keen to go one step further and helped raise enough interest for a Fibre-to-the-Premises platform.

Ron Simpson, Secretary of the Uppingham First Community Partnership, said:
“Having experienced the colossal speeds available with fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) I would never go back. Whole families can be online with no degradation in performance. We now use a telephone service from Vonage to make calls from our existing handsets over the broadband network. With Gigaclear the lines are crystal clear. We expect to soon cut out the cost of a landline altogether – and to make further savings through the use of other Internet-based services.”
Shane James, Managing Director of Rutland Telecom, added:
“The network took just over three months to complete. Residents have remarked how smooth the construction and installation process was and reacted very positively to the new service. We are delighted to see them sharing ways to get the most out of it.”
As usual Gigaclear isn’t standing still and has pledged to extend their fibre optic network from The Beeches area and into the Uppingham Gate business park. On top of that the ISP is also looking to bring its service to other parts of Uppingham and surrounding areas based on demand.
In addition it’s important to point out that Gigaclear’s entry-level 10Mbps package also offers “boosts” to 1Gbps and more details of their Vonage based VoIP service can be found in this article (here).
