Cable operator Virgin Media has advised Home Phone customers with friends, family or businesses in the Typhoon battered Philippines that they can now make free calls to the country until the end of November 2013.
Calls to the Philippines are usually more expensive than most due to the lack of good international telecoms infrastructure in the country. For example, the standard rate on Virgin Media is £1.68 per minute for land lines and £2.03 for mobiles (significantly less if you take Virgin’s Talk International service). Admittedly some providers charge a lot less and the likes of Skype usually make such calls much more viable.

However, in recognition of the on-going situation, Virgin Media are allowing free calls to the Philippines (mobile and landline) at any time, day or night, via their home phone service. As usual the calls are free for a maximum of one hour and you can make as many calls as you like – just redial before you get to 60 minutes to avoid any call charges.
Admittedly there aren’t many Filipino’s on Virgin’s network but this is none the less a very kind gesture and we know a few people that will be very happy to hear about it. Salamat sa tulong nila.
