A joint £1,000 project undertaken by Northallerton Retail & Business Forum, Northallerton Town Council and Hambleton District Council has resulted in the installation of a new free wifi hotspot being deployed to cover Northallerton High Street.
The running costs for the Northallerton i-Street project will be shared between the schemes partners, while the town council is also understood to be providing a phone line from the town hall (we assume this is being used for the supply of fixed line broadband capacity).

Mayor of Northallerton, Councillor John Forrest, said:
“Since I became Mayor I’ve wanted to get wi-fi in the High Street. I’m glad Hambleton District Council was thinking along the same lines too. Working together, and with the added support of local businesses, it has been easy to deliver something that can give our High Street another advantage to compete in what remain difficult economic times.”
The service itself was installed by community wireless ISP CLANNET, which is a small operation that has deployed several similar networks around various parts of North Yorkshire.
