EE UK Reveal Replacement for Free 2-for-1 Pizzas and Cinema Tickets

Wednesday, Mar 18th, 2015 (8:52 am) - Score 1,650

Remember last year’s surprising news that EE had finally scrapped their long running “Orange Wednesdays” promotion of free 2-for-1 Pizzas (or dough balls) and Cinema tickets for their broadband and mobile customers (here)? Well there’s now a replacement – a blockbuster film every week for all customers, for just £1.

The old promotion officially came to an end on 25th February 2015 and it’s now been announced that the replacement, EE Film Club, will officially launch on 30th March 2015. Customers will be able to choose from a wide range of films, including “new releases” (note: not current cinema releases), via the Wuaki.tv app and desktop platform across all compatible devices.

Apparently customers can take advantage of the EE £1 film offer each week by texting “film” to 141 to receive a promotional code, which can then be redeemed Monday to Wednesday at the Wuaki.tv check out (note: texts cost 35p and users have 48 hours from redemption to watch their film rental, so technically it’s £1.35 a week).

Pippa Dunn, Chief Marketing Officer at EE, said:

More people than ever before are downloading and streaming movies so they can watch at home or on the go. With 1 in 3 UK adults enjoying digital entertainment every week – and this number is only going to grow – our viewing habits are clearly evolving. This reaffirms our commitment to put customers first as we deliver a series of new offers in 2015. The new weekly £1 film offer launches at the end of March and is set to be a box office hit with our customers.”

The new promotion is interesting, not least because it’s a clear saving over Wuaki’s standard rental fee of £3.49 per movie (£4.49 for HD) and also appears to reflect the rising adoption of Internet video streaming services.

On the other hand Wuaki isn’t anything like as popular as Netflix, NOW TV or other unlimited streaming platforms, not to mention that the 2-for-1 Cinema tickets or Pizza offer seemed like a generally more attractive promotion. Time will tell.
