Fibre optic ISP Gigaclear has confirmed that their first 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based cabinet is now live as part of the £10m Fastershire contract (here), which aims to reach an extra 6,495 premises in rural Gloucestershire (Cotswolds) by the end of May 2017.
The first communities to benefit from the new service, which only began rolling out two months ago, include homes and businesses in Cockleford, Coberley and Cowley, with many more set to follow (here). The project itself is funded by £7m from Gigaclear and £3m from the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK programme.
Matthew Hare, CEO of Gigaclear, said:
“This is the first ultrafast cabinet of many that will deliver blistering fast broadband to the residents and business of the Cotswold District in Gloucestershire. Installing a new, pure fibre communications network with internet speeds up to 1000Mbps will really transform the work, play, entertainment and communications experience for all our customers in the area. And in the long term, the pure fibre network will mean that the community has a future proof network that will not need updating over time as their broadband requirements grow.”
Ed Vaizey MP, Digital Economy Minister, said:
“Our rollout of superfast broadband has already reached more than 50,000 homes and businesses in Gloucestershire, and more than 3.5 million premises across the UK. Gigaclear’s ultrafast cabinet will transform broadband speeds in the Cotswolds and I congratulate the Fastershire project on their success to date.”
End.
UPDATE 13th Dec 2015
