Sky UK Confirms Launch of Ultra HD 4K TV Service for August 2016

Thursday, Jul 14th, 2016 (8:50 am) - Score 2,026

Sky (Sky Broadband) has finally confirmed that their new Sky Q range of TV, phone and broadband bundles will from 13th August 2016 finally be able to benefit from Ultra HD (4K) TV content, which will apparently deliver the “UK’s most comprehensive Ultra HD service.”

Apparently customers will be able to setup their Sky Q Silver boxes to be 4K ready from the end of July before the service goes live, which can be done by going to “Settings > Setup > Audio Visual > and select 2160p“. If you do not make that change then you will be prompted to when attempting to view in Ultra HD (press the red button and follow the on screen instructions).

However in order to benefit subscribers will also need the Sky Q Silver box and subscription, as well as a compatible Ultra HD TV that supports 2160p resolution at 50 frames per second and HDCP 2.2.

Mind you the Sky Q Silver TV packages aren’t cheap and start at £56 per month (plus discounted £10 one-off setup), which includes a Sky Q Silver box with 2TB of storage and 1 Sky Q Mini box; all of that is before you add broadband and phone, if so desired. But Sky are throwing in a free 32″ LG TV or £100 reward.

Luke Bradley-Jones, Sky’s Director of TV & Content, said:

“With Sky Q, we created the world’s best TV experience. Now with the introduction of an unrivalled line-up of Ultra HD TV, the service is going to get even better, truly enhancing customers’ viewing experience. So whether you’re a football fan, movie buff, natural history enthusiast or drama junkie, customers looking for the next-generation of TV viewing will love it.”

However Sky aren’t the first to venture into 4K and BT has already launched their own Ultra HD TV service, although they don’t use Satellite distribution like Sky and instead require customers to have a 44Mbps capable BTInfinity (FTTC) broadband line in order to leave some overhead for other Internet use.

Meanwhile Virgin Media intend to follow with their own 4K service launching sometime over the next few months, which will come in the form of an upgraded TiVo service and box. Otherwise, here’s a quick rundown of the content that Sky’s new 4K service will deliver, depending upon your subscription options.
