KCOM Detail Q4 – 2017 FTTP Broadband Rollout to 11,555 Premises in Hull

Tuesday, Oct 10th, 2017 (7:55 am) - Score 794

East Yorkshire ISP KCOM has today announced the final 2017 phase of their £60m Lightstream project, which aims to have deployed their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) dominated “ultrafast broadband” network to a further 11,555 premises in Hull between now and the end of the year.

Last month we revealed that KCOM’s deployment had so far extended to cover 132,500 premises (here) and that put them on-target to achieve their current goal of 150,000 by the end of December 2017 (i.e. 75% of their overall network), which is further reinforced by today’s update.

Residential connections are generally offered a maximum line speed of up to 250Mbps (30Mbps upload) on FTTP, although a future 350Mbps option is being trialled (here). However it’s worth noting that around 8% of the operator’s Lightstream network is based off their slower ‘up to’ 75Mbps Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) service.

At present the operator’s Q4-2017 deployment plan, which isn’t yet showing on their Lightstream roll-out page (this will be updated shortly), would appear to represent the final phase of their current FTTP/C roll-out programme.

However KCOM’s plan for the 10Mbps USO has already revealed (here) that by the end of 2020 they “expect that every residential and business customer (both in the Hull area and where our network is available in East Yorkshire) would be able to connect to our NGA fibre network,” although this has yet to be formally announced and KCOM might potentially wait until they’ve see Ofcom’s competition proposals before doing so (here).

In the meantime a full list of the final roll-out locations for 2017, which will benefit a further 8,000 7,000+ premises in North Hull and 4,450 4,500 in East Hull, has just been published.
