UK ISP Community Fibre has managed to hit their deployment target in the London Borough of Wandsworth by making a 1000Mbps capable ultrafast fibre optic (FTTP/H) broadband network available to 10,000 council homes in time for the end of 2017. Just another 10,000 left to go.
So far homes across the Savona, Patmore, Carey Gardens, Doddington, Kambala, Rollo, Surrey Lane, Winstanley and York Road, Ashburton, Arndale and William Willison estates have already gained the capacity to access Community Fibre’s service. Going forward these estates are also expected to be joined by Doris Emmerton Court and Holmleigh Court sheltered schemes
Longer term the council’s partnership with Community Fibre aims to offer more than 20,000 homes access to the “Gigafast” network over the next few years. The progress is impressive considering that the ISP only just hit the 5,500 homes mark in October 2017.
Clare Salier, Council’s Housing Spokesperson, said:
“Fast, reliable broadband is not a luxury – these days it’s a necessity. We want Wandsworth to be London’s most connected borough and this ultrafast service means people living on our estates can truly make the most of fast online access and all the benefits that brings.”
Meanwhile Community Fibre, which last year secured £11.3m of private equity investment (here) to help support their long-term aspiration of covering 500,000 homes in London (here), is also reaching thousands of homes (usually council managed blocks / apartments) around Battersea and Roehampton. The operator is also deploying into Hammersmith and Fulham.
Over the shorter term Community Fibre hopes to cover 50,000 properties across London by the end of 2018. Packages tend to start at just £20 per month for a 20Mbps (1Mbps upload) service and this rises to £50 for a fully symmetric 1000Mbps connection, which includes free installation and unlimited usage.
