As expected cable broadband ISP and TV operator Virgin Media UK (Liberty Global) has today opened a brand new 120,000 square feet HQ building in the large town of Reading (Green Park), which will play host to nearly 1,500 staff; the first ones are moving into the site this week.
The new building – 500 Brook Drive (RG2 6UU) – is said to be part of Virgin Media’s “multi-million pound property investment programme,” which claims to be providing thousands of staff with better quality working environments. As such the new facility includes 1,200 desks, breakout areas, meeting rooms, a staff restaurant – complete with “super-sized glitter ball” – and separate barista coffee shop.
As you’d expect the building is designed to support energy efficiency with smart energy-efficient lighting, 10 electric vehicle charging stations and all of the building’s electricity comes from 100% renewable sources. New measures have also been put in place to “dramatically reduce the amount of single-use plastic consumed in the building” (due to be rolled out across the rest of VM’s estate in the New Year – could mean up to 3 million fewer single-use plastic items are used every year).
On top of that the building includes accessibility for those with mobility and hearing problems (step-free access, signage, hearing loops in key spaces etc.).
Bill Castell, VM’s Acting Chief Financial Officer, said:
“We’ve invested millions of pounds in our new HQ to create a state-of-the-art office and bring more than a thousand jobs to Reading.
This comes on top of our recent investment to bring the fastest gigabit broadband speeds to residents across Reading, something we’ll deliver across our entire network by the end of 2021.
This new site provides our people with a next-generation work environment to inspire creativity and help Virgin Media to keep growing and give our customers cutting-edge products and services.”
The move comes only a week after Virgin Media flicked the switch to make their 1Gbps (DOCSIS 3.1) based broadband network upgrade available across most of Reading and many surrounding areas (here).
Seems like a big building for the 4 people that will remain insource working for the company in due course.
Shame when they’ll need to close it down after Labour nationalise BT and give broadband free to everyone. No need for Virgin Media at all then.
Good thing it’s never going to happen then – isn’t it?
Its a more vivid fantasy than those you normally have on here. Still as equally clueless and hopeless though.
When is London getting 1gb from virgin?
I bet that’s with all the increases they put onto customers at least twice a year
Yep, if they can make money from unhappy stupids that like to carry on paying rather than going elsewhere then they may as well splash out and enjoy the wealth from the stupids, that do nothing to help thereself but moan on here.
Then again it could be money well spent from millions of happy customers, rather than the odd stupid one
Either way, sounds like excellent business to me.
1500 staff. 1200 desks, 10 EV chargers
So hotdesking and dicking around trying to charge your car, sounds like Virmin want to give staff the same experience as their customers get
Or for the those that do not know how work places actually work…
1500 staff in total and 1200 desks…
Because people work in shifts, rather than 1500 all at one single time, all needing their own desk and all on the phone for a single shift from 8am till 10pm (or 14 hours straight, or the times VM phone support operates).
Yes i know its hard to believe they may operate in shifts of say something like 7 hours at a time split between that 1500 staff. Must be a shock to stop and think for a moment.
As for the car charging i would not be shocked if there are not even 10 staff that own an EV.
Ah the VM news pieces and the stupids never disappoint.
Only 10 EV chargers? terrible, you would need to arrive 1-2 hours early just to hope/get the EV spot.
How many of the 1500 staff have an EV car then?
What proportion of people that aren’t driving a taxi are driving hybrids in your experience, Simon?
How about plug-in hybrids?
Fully electric vehicles?
How many parking spaces are there onsite you think? You reckon there’ll be 1200, one for each and every desk available? No-one using public transport, car sharing, etc?
I suspect 10 charging points will be ample for now – more can be added as required.
What proportion of your employer’s or a former employer’s HQ’s parking spaces have EV charging points? Any evidence VM are behind the curve here?
I suppose the statements from a couple over the EV points could had been dumber. They could had stated its terrible the car park does not have its own petrol pump for the majority of the workers. : D
Go away Virgin Media shut down unavailable support problem missed Sky Atlantic Channel by Virgin Media make trouble didn’t unwanted happened British people unhappy show like Sky Atlantic Channel very so sad
The reason Virgin doesn’t have Sky Atlantic is simply it’s Sky exclusive channel they don’t have to provide the channel to other provider if they choose not to.
Someone testing a comment program again?
This one needs more time and input for machine learning.
Its a comment from one of those new IoT devices. AKA Idiot only Thinking.
There’s some really stupid people leaving comments on here. VM have improved massively over the past few years and have closed the gap, the results, customer service scores and delivery scores from independent surveys don’t lie !
