The mobile division of Supermarket giant Tesco (Tesco Mobile) has today become the latest operator to launch plans based off the new ultrafast 5G network technology, which is initially available in busy parts of 24 cities across the United Kingdom. Prices start from just £15 per month for a SIM Only plan.
Tesco Mobile is based off a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement with O2, which means that their network coverage must follow the roll-out plan of the latter – they aim to cover a total of 50 UK towns and cities by summer 2020 (here).
Otherwise we note that Tesco’s 5G plans are a bit different from their existing 4G ones. For example, a 4G SIM Only plan on a 12 month term with 5GB of data, 2000 minutes and 5000 texts costs £10 a month, but the closest match with 5G gives you 5GB of data, 5000 minutes, 5000 texts and costs £15 a month (add £5 for a 30 day term). Likewise you can get 25GB for £15 on 4G.
Clearly Tesco aren’t following the same “at no extra cost” mould as other operators.
Tom Denyard, CEO of Tesco Mobile, said:
“Today marks an exciting step for Tesco Mobile as we bring the latest technology to our customers. We’ve taken the time to be in a position to offer great value tariffs, making 5G accessible to everyone – all with the added perks of being part of the Tesco family.”
Naturally you’ll need a 5G equipped Smartphone (Tesco has several bundles with these at extra cost) and be within the currently very limited coverage space of related networks in order to benefit from the extra performance.

Tesco Mobile entry pricing for the latest no-contract SIM 5G tariffs is absolutely pointless. I mean why bother even offering a high bandwidth service if you’re not going to be able to provide an unlimited amount of data?
I don’t care about 5G; just get my 2G signal working please. It is many years since I had a reliable signal.
I never knew 02 and Ultrafast were in the same era..
Wondering where the hell is this Three 5G launch…. Even Tesco has launched!
Three launched 5G in 66 areas last month. Don’t think ISPReview reported on it.
This site did report on that https://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php/2020/02/three-uk-to-go-live-with-ultrafast-5g-mobile-at-65-locations.html
It did launch literally last week. You can see it working if you search it on YouTube.
