UK ISP Giganet has just connected their 100th customer to CityFibre’s new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the south coast city of Portsmouth (Hampshire, UK). This might not sound like much, but for a smaller provider it comes only two months after the service first started to go live.
At present the network in Portsmouth, which is costing £32m to build, already covers a total of 9,588 homes and many more are due to follow. By the end of this year, some 24,000 local homes should be able to get connected to the new network and at the end of the initial 3-year phase, it is projected to reach 87,000 homes.
The work forms part of CityFibre’s wider £4bn investment programme (here), which currently aims to cover 8 million premises across 285 cities, towns and villages (c.30% of the UK) – the latter target is expected to be “substantially completed” by the end of 2025.
Peter Clarke from Helena Road, Southsea, officially became Giganet’s 100th local customer last Friday when it subscribed to their 900Mbps broadband package. The next cities to benefit from Giganet’s partnership with CityFibre are Swindon, Reading, Plymouth, Crawley and Horsham, with more cities to be added in the future.
