Vodafone UK Gift Pay Monthly Customers 6 Months Discovery+

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has today announced that “all pay-monthly” customers on their 4G and 5G plans can now enjoy Discovery+ TV content (video streaming) for 6 months at no extra cost, which also includes access to the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 via 55 live event feeds and 2,000 hours of on-demand action.

Customers who want to redeem this offer can do so through VeryMe (via the ‘My Vodafone app’) or through Vodafone’s dedicated discovery+ landing page at no extra cost. At the end of their six-month offer period, customers will have the option to continue their subscription for £4.99 per month or cancel the service without any charge.

Max Taylor, Consumer Director, Vodafone UK, said: “The British summer of sport is going from strength to strength, which is why we’re delighted to give our customers access to discovery+ Entertainment just in time for Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. There’s also a wide range of content outside of sport that customers can enjoy, including documentaries and boxsets.”

Personally speaking, we’re of the view that there are now far too many commercial video streaming platforms (Netflix, Amazon, NOW TV, Disney+, Discovery+, Apple TV etc.), which has resulted in an ugly and expensive fragmentation of the TV content market. But that’s another story.

I’m with you on that one, Mark.
The market is getting too fragmented and there’s too many services and subscriptions now.

Some quick calculations if you add Netflix (4K), Amazon, Now TV (entertainment), Disney+, Apple TV and Britbox comes to around £49/month. Add Now TV Sports and you’re up to £83/month. I haven’t even added Discovery+, and presumably HBO Max and Peacock may launch over here at some point too.

Obviously some of these services do have cheaper annual options, and you may not want every service (and can dip in and out if you like), but if there are things you want to watch on all these different services, it may get expensive very quickly!

Presumably Sky/Virgin must still have things that people like to watch too, despite the plethora of streaming services!

I am trading three (out of four) Netflix accounts for two Spotify accounts, one Disney+ and Discovery account. I can’t see the reason for paying for all of those as a subscription.

First “free” gift from Vodafone I’ve actually wanted after many years as a customer! Granted, it’s just to hook me in and has likely cost them nothing but if the content is good I *might* continue past the free 6 months. Big thumbs up to ISPR for publicising this!
