Broadband ISP TalkTalk Expected to Adopt Netgem TV Service UPDATE

Wednesday, Sep 29th, 2021 (4:28 pm) - Score 5,496

A number of reports today have claimed that TalkTalk will, effective from October 2021, partner up with Netgem TV to offer their UK home broadband customers access to a new set-top-box for premium TV (IPTV) services, but only those on their “ultrafast broadband” (e.g. FTTP) plans will be able to take it.

Recently, TalkTalk did appear to be taking a step back from their existing YouView (IPTV) based Pay TV products (here), although they’ve also been linked to a recently approved Android based TV box from Technicolor (UZW4054TTG). But so far the operator’s future direction, at least with respect to Pay TV services, has remained unclear.

On the flip side, Netgem TV’s box and service have already been adopted by a growing number of smaller UK ISPs, particularly alternative networks. The set-top-boxes that they provide – Netbox HD and Netbox 4K – tend to be similar to some of those supplied by rival video streaming companies, including the usual array of premium content (sports), apps (Amazon Prime Video, BT Sport, hayu, Rakuten TV, YouTube etc.), live TV channels (Freeview) and catch-up content.

NOTE: Netgem TV will next month also introduce their new managed ‘Content as a Service’ platform, which could be another possible option for TalkTalk.

According to The Express, TalkTalk will next month become the latest ISP to supply Pay TV access via the Netgem TV platform. But only customers on their “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) packages will be able to access this, which is reportedly due to need for faster internet connection speeds in order to deliver the content. We’re a little sceptical of that since a single 4K video stream can run at around 20-30Mbps, but.. marketing.

Customers can reportedly expect to be charged £4 per month to access the new Netgem TV solution, which is the same entry price as TalkTalk’s existing Pay TV service. At the time of writing, we couldn’t find any official announcements about this from either TalkTalk or Netgem TV, and nor have our hails to both generated a response.

By the sounds of it, TalkTalk may announce all of this at around the same time as Sky unveil their new Sky Glass and Sky over IP (SoIP) TV service (here). But we should caution that this could also be similar to how TalkTalk have bundled Freesat TV Boxes in the recent past (here), which did not replace their main Pay TV solution.

UPDATE 4:54pm

A spokesperson for TalkTalk told ISPreview.co.uk: “We can confirm that we are in late-stage discussions with Netgem. As with everything we do, we are always looking to give our customers the best TV experience in the market.”

Another one jumps on the rickety Netjuck bandwagon, they may as well have shelved their entire TV division.

I wonder when talktalk will release their 1000mb package on openreach

Should be this Autumn. Though their Business division has been selling it for almost 1 year now.

Wow, the netgem stuff is abysmal. Better off buying a FireTV Stick or Roku or AppleTV or even using the “smart TV” features built into most TVs. The NetGem box is cheap and nasty, the UI is no better than any of those I’ve already mentioned and it doesn’t give you access to any content you couldn’t already access. It is crap!

Netgem sucks and lacks some applications that you can get currently on Youview like Netflix and Now! Plus no ability to record unless you use external HDD

Good for you talk talk I have said to you in the past you need a new set top box to compete with sky bt and one or 2more

    1. Avatar photo Thane says:

Talk Talk do need a new STB to compete, however Netgem are not good for them, or more importantly their customers. As others have said, it’s a dreadful platform, a really poor decision IMO.

They should have maybe tried working with Amazon again and implemented their TV like they have for their routers

When will be the great day, with Netgem.TV available at Talk Talk?

I wonder it will be quickly! Greatly friendly user platform! Lots of content and simple access to FreeView! One of the best quality-cost options in the market!

Netgem TV is a pay TV service offering premium content alongside Freeview Play.

It also acts as a central hub for subscription services like Prime Video and BT Sport, though these must be paid for separately.

Netgem TV comes with a 4K set-top box, allowing HD and UHD content to be accessed if a customer has the right TV to go along with it.

Although customers can subscribe to Netgem TV separately, it is also available as an extra service from broadband providers like Origin Broadband and Community Fibre.

So, from talk talk too? When?

Netgem TV since august 2021, is offering subscribers 200 channels, following the addition of an extra 20 channels.

The IPTV platform has also added from Channel 5’s kids brand Milkshake! including Peppa Pig, Milkshake Monkey, and Thomas and Friends

Louise Bucknole, VP Kids Programming, ViacomCBS Networks UK & Ireland commented: “We are delighted to team up with Netgem TV and be part of their expansion bringing Milkshake! to families using Netgem TV across the UK. With ‘School’s Out Avenue’, kids will have access to their favourite Milkshake! shows, keeping them entertained throughout the summer and beyond.”

Netgem has recently announced plans to add BT Sport and SportsTribal TV to its line-up alongside lifestyle channel Cooking Panda and kids service Toon Goggles TV.
