Energy provider and UK ISP Shell Energy has updated the prices of their broadband packages (ADSL, FTTC and G.fast) and also dropped their previous promise for “no end-of-contract price rises.” In addition, Shell has adopted BT’s approach to annual price hikes, which will see prices rise each year by CPI (inflation) + up to 3%.
Previously, Shell’s website said that prices for new customers would only increase each year, from 1st April 2022 onwards, by just the rate of inflation, but they’ve now added the additional mention of “up to 3%” on top of that increase. One other caveat today is that new broadband customers who are already existing Shell Energy customers will no longer receive preferential pricing when they sign-up.
Some other charges have also increased. For example, the Call Connection Charge to the EU has gone from 0p to 23p, while UK call charges have risen by 3p to 18pence per minute and the cost of Paper Billing has doubled from £1 to £2. Various other call features and related service charges have seen similar increases.

Otherwise, Shell’s broadband packages are now priced as follows. All include a wireless router, 18-month minimum contract term, free activation, unlimited usage and copper line rental with standard call rates (PAYG). But if you need a new line installed, then that will attract a one-off fee of £60.

Not too unexpected though as Ofcom remove more and more cost controls on Openreach-based services.
