Devon and Somerset UK Issue July 2022 Airband FTTP Build Update

The Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project and UK ISP Airband have today issued a new July 2022 update on their Phase 2 contract to deploy a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across the region, which has so far covered 2,500 premises in hard to reach rural areas.

The work largely reflects Airband’s ongoing contract with the provider, which stems from the £25.5m Phase 2 CDS deal for 37,500 premises (here). Prior to that, they were also working on a separate Fibre Extension Programme (FEP) contract for c.6,200 premises, but it’s unclear if that has now completed (here). Work on the current Phase 2 contract is expected to complete by the end of 2024.

NOTE: Airband has so far provided “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) access to around 22,400 premises across the two counties on behalf of CDS, but that figure includes their earlier Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) builds too.

In terms of the latest build developments, access to Airband’s live full fibre network is now available in the Cheddon Fitzpaine area of Taunton in Somerset, as well as premises in some areas of Exminster, Kenn, Kennford, Kenton, Powderham, Starcross, Teignmouth and Tiverton. We’ve also got a summary of the next areas to benefit, across different stages of build.

Airband’s Deployment Progress to July 2022

➤ Splicing and testing of fibre is being carried out in Bathpool, Bishops Lydeard, Calverleigh, Cotford St Luke, Cruwys Morchard, Monkton Heathfield, Nomansland, Norton Fitzwarren, Puddington, Staplegrove, north west Taunton, Tiverton, Tolland, West Monkton and Withleigh.

➤ Build is due to be completed in the coming weeks in Bere Alston, Clovelly, Crapstone, Hartland, Langtree, Lewtrenchard, Lifton, Milton Abbot, Milton Combe, Powderham, Starcross and Tavistock, as well as remaining contracted areas of Exminster, Kenn, Kenton, Powderham and Starcross.

➤ Build is also underway in Abbotsham, Ashcombe, Berry Pomeroy, Bishopsteignton, Bradninch, Butterleigh, Collaton St Mary, Crowcombe, Cullompton, east of Tiverton, Halberton, Higher Blagdon, Holcombe, Sampford Peverell, Stogumber, parts of Taunton, parts of Teignmouth, Totnes and West Bagborough.

➤ Network design work is being carried out in Abbotskerswell, Axminster, Bishops Hull, Blackpool Corner, Buckfastleigh, Budleigh Salterton, Churchill, Cockwood, Colaton Raleigh, Combpyne, Clyst St Mary, Dartington, parts of Dartmouth, Dawlish Warren, Dean Prior, East Budleigh, Farringdon, Galmpton, Hatch Beauchamp, Henlade, Higher Batson, Holcombe, Hope Cove, parts of Kingsteignton, Knowle, Mamhead Park, Marsh Green, Newton Abbot, Salcombe, South Knighton, Staple Fitzpaine, parts of Stoke Fleming, Stoke St Mary, Teigngrace, Thurlestone, parts of Topsham, Totnes, Tytherleigh, West Buckland, West Hatch, and Wyke Green.

➤ Early engineering survey work has also begun in a number of communities including Alfington, Beaford, Beer, Colyton, Compton, Dainton, Gittisham, Marldon, and parts of Sidmouth.

The Director of Airband, Redmond Peel, said: “We have made good progress with the rollout so far and will always seek to speed up the rollout to areas in need wherever this is possible.” However, they’ll need to build faster than this in order to reach the contracted target on time, so we’ll be looking to see how much they’ve ramped-up their pace come the next update.

On top of that it’s worth noting that other operators, such as Openreach, Jurassic Fibre and Wildanet, also appear to be playing in some of the same areas as Airband (e.g. Totnes and Sidmouth), albeit as part of commercial deployments. At this stage, it’s still unclear how much overbuild will actually occur in such areas.

UPDATE 13th July 2022

It’s worth pointing out that any area listed as being “live” may not always translate to 100% coverage, which is a common issue with all network operators and deployments. Sometimes operators come back later to infill and hit near 100%, but other times they don’t, and only partial coverage exists.

For example, the central part of Cheddon Fitzpaine (e.g. TA2 5ZE), which is first on the list above, returns a result on Airband’s checker of “Sorry, we’re not in your area“. But postcodes at the edge of that area, such as TA2 8JU, do work.

However, the second catch here is that Airband’s website doesn’t yet allow people in the supposedly “live” postcode to place an order, instead it’s still at the “register your interest” stage (i.e. it’s not yet truly LIVE). We do wish these sorts of issues would be resolved before declaring an area live.

The way it’s going, my area will have at least 2 if not 3 FTTP providers available, how many overhead fibres can the poles take?!

Lucky you! Zero choice here! 🙁

We’ll just be happy more providers to choose from. Better prices.

Sounds good until you realise none of them will be able to compete with such small take up long term so some will bust and others will become merged with larger players.

cds & airband are hopeless they have done all the surrounding roads on this estate & town centre etc except for 4 including mine had an email from airband saying it was because cds didnt plan it in ? i can throw a stone to where they have laid fibre what a carry on, no wonder this country seems inept at doing anything properly first time. ps rant over.

Can’t see Airband coping with faster anything…. Lack of skilled installers, lower than average repair times, slow 14 day waits for repairs.
rural areas are (as usual) being left in the dark…OTA speeds advertised woefully inaccurate, FTP only *IF* you’re within sight of a connection point… more than 2 miles away you’ve NO CHANCE of fibre. Considering the income the company is pulling in (20 million in hand end 2020) a hard drive for more engineers wouldn’t be a bad idea.
Blitich Terriblecom have many disgruntled engineers looking for other positions…POACH them… Wake up Peel…. You’re lagging behind

Airband sent letters out last Summer but they’ve missed the boat where I live. 200 properties on 4mb copper from OR up to mid April 2022. Now they’re all going to the OR FTTP network as they did the main dig and laid ducting in late MARCH. 900mb available from numerous providers and Airband have only just appeared at the end of a lane down the road and still digging.

Heard that they’ve nicked some BT managers and almost doubled their salaries on 5 year contracts. The local OR engineers are hoping for a phone call seeing as they’re about to strike.

Airband do have new managers who are out of their depth, not delivering and treating the old staff badly. Also statements in this article are miles from the truth, bad designs / not delivering, don’t wait for them, if other options are there then take them.
    CDS, OPEN YOUR EYES !!

Airband engineers are working without any care to Health and safety, I do question why CDS and councils are not clamping down on these rogue traders!
I have been lied too when broadband is coming to my area, CDS don’t seem to have any control on their suppliers?

Sadly Airband are the only kids on the block here (rural Devon, west of Tiverton). They are woefully behind and clearly struggling.

From watching them at work and talking to the people on the ground it is clear that they just don’t have the people they need to do the job in the timescale they planned, it wouldn’t surprise me if they burn through all that cash and leave the job perhaps 20% done.

I just have to hope that we are in that 20%. Not holding my breath though!

Same story and same excuses in shropshire and cheshire. Funded projects do not work, it leaves the local authorities at the mercy of the suppliers and airband know how to play the game. The local authorities have 2 choices, terminate the contract and lose the funding meaning none get connected, or continue as best as possible to at least get some delivered with the funding. When the project is setup, there will be premises in contract and out of contract, and those out of contract are not guaranteed to get it, even if they are 100m from a property that is getting it. It’s
not that they have been missed out, it is what was agreed. Crap i know but its the way it is and hence me saying these funded projects with a single supplier do not work
