New UK Sky Stream TV Customers No Longer Own the Box (puck)

New customers of the Sky Stream TV product, which uses your home broadband ISP (doesn’t have to be Sky Broadband) and WiFi to stream Sky’s on-demand video and live TV content directly to your existing TV without a satellite dish, may be displeased to learn that they no longer own the set-top-box (puck) itself.

The Sky Stream service typically starts from £26 a month on an 18-month term (£29 for a 31-day term) – this covers Sky Entertainment and the Netflix Basic plan. But at launch you also had to pay a £39.95 one-off set-up fee (or £20 if you took an 18-month contract) to help cover the hardware cost (i.e. Stream puck and voice remote).

NOTE: Sky Stream works with any broadband ISP, provided you can get a download speed of at least 10Mbps.

The good thing about the original terms is that customers who purchased this service got to keep the set-top-box for themselves at the end of their contract. As a result, some even ended up putting them on eBay, although without an active Sky Stream subscription the pucks are effectively useless.

The bad news is that Sky updated the T&C’s for Sky Stream on 23rd February 2023 (here) and one of the changes they made was to add a loan clause. In short, the pucks are now defined as “loaned equipment” rather than owned, which means you’ll have to return them when you cancel the service and may have to pay Sky an as yet unspecified amount if you lose the box. Customers who joined under the old terms aren’t affected by this, yet.

At an extreme, Sky’s new terms even take the step of threatening customers with “legal action” if they fail to return the puck. But such action would probably cost more than the device itself is worth and they’d thus be much more likely to simply charge a fee to cover the lost kit.

Extract from the New Sky Stream T&C’s (new terms vs old terms)

Where your Sky Stream puck has been provided by Sky, it is loaned equipment supplied to you at no extra cost and remains the property of Sky (or another group company) at all times.

As you must not dispose of loaned equipment we recommend you insure it against loss, theft or damage for the full replacement value.

You must return or allow us to collect loaned equipment when reasonably requested to do so. This is the case even if it is being used by you to receive third party retailed content or services and you are responsible for managing any subscriptions with third parties.

If you fail to return the loaned equipment you will have to pay a non-return charge. For more information about these charges go to sky.com/nonreturncharge.

Payment of the non-return charge does not transfer ownership of loaned equipment to you and you are still required to return the loan equipment to us following our reasonable request.

If your Sky streaming TV services end or are restricted your Sky Stream puck will simply stop working and you will not be able to receive any content including free to air channels or other third party content and services.

If we have requested that you return loaned equipment to us and you have failed to do so we may take legal action to recover it from you.

You must tell us immediately if your Sky Stream puck is lost, stolen, damaged or faulty.

You need a TV with a HDMI port to view your TV subscription service via a Sky Stream puck.

Your Sky Stream puck will not have any functionality unless you also have a TV subscription service.

However, loaned kit does have its advantages, such as in the fact that Sky is no longer charging that £39.95 setup fee for Sky Stream. On top of that they’ve also pledged to “repair or replace the loaned equipment at no cost to you if it becomes faulty,” unless of course you caused the damage yourself or lost the puck.

As the box is apparently useless without an active subscription it seems to be a sensible move to me, if only to reduce e-waste.

Until somebody figures out how to flash it to do something else 🙂

@Mark: Good luck to the modders… Sky have form of shutting down exploits on their kit practically overnight.

Yes I canceled mine last week and was told to keep it as I got it before 23rd of Feb. You can re activate it via a button on the screen so handy to keep incase.

    1. Avatar photo Comments says:

      Of course you did.

    2. Avatar photo haha says:

I did actually. I got 3 months free on the actual service but I had to pay £11 a month for UHD and skip the ads and I cancelled it after 2 months in..

I also got free BT Sport from work – not that I put it on the Sky box – I could have done. 🙂

The article seems to be written backwards.

“Sky drop £39.99” setup fee on sky stream” would be a better take on this.

Having the hardware owned by sky is the same as it is on Sky Q.

Who care about Sky. Sod it.

I use Zgemma freesat (happy with it – free access to all freesat channels inc full HD and some on 4K UHD and recording both channels at the same time and can playback with it. Far better than useless Sky.

Glad I left Sky ages ago. Never go back EVER!

Phil, i bought two zegemma boxes in november 2022, both h9.2s one has openvix imaged the other open atv,, both bought together at the same time. Last month they both went wrong quite letrely on the same day. One straight after the other, i have since revertted back to my old vu+ boxes which work fine. I do not recommend the zegemma box
Especially after the supplier refused to accept them back!
W’O’S said that unless i was prepared to pay they would not be fixed. Both boxes have bricked up, and are stuck in start up.
You might have been lucky phil, but the seller doesent want to know or offer help etc, and yes ive tried the usb reflash, from backup.
I think they are £214 down the drain!

    2. Avatar photo Phil says:

      @Mark

I have no issues with my Zgemma box as I brought it from here: https://www.world-of-satellite.co.uk/zgemma/zgemma-h9-twin with same firmware and use it for 2 years now with no problem.

    3. Avatar photo Mark says:

Phil you were lucky, but when they go wrong world of satellite where mine came from are of no help. They are good little boxes i know. But not much good if your so called retailer wont help.
Tonight i have contacted zegemma themselves see if they can shed light on this problem. But what i can say is freesat is a better option than both sky Q or sky stream, as its free!
All im after now is some form of technical support in order to reboot these boxes but as world of satellite know very little about them its no use using them for answers. Anyway thats my fault and problem for buying from them shall use a reputable dealer in future who knows what they are selling. My aging vu+ boxes need replacement after almost 15 years, so will have to try someone else.

    4. Avatar photo Phil says:

@Mark, sorry to hear this. Yeah I guess I am very lucky. I can see VU+ are very expensive box as I went for Zgemma instead to save me money cost.

Have you try factory resetted and reflash new firmware with latest image might solved your zgemma box?

    5. Avatar photo Mark says:

Thats the problem phil, i already had a usb backed up and flashed for resetting etc, in case of problems but both boxes for some strange reason are stuck in boot up after standby or to put it another way they don,t show the firmware spinner they just bricked up and freeze on images. W’O’S want me to send them back for repairs costing me £14 return.
I find that a bit much after their so called two guarantee. What im after is a reimage usb, one seprate to mine, as im sure they will both work after this. Its getting a diffrent image! But as W,O,S dont seem to know or care about box reimiging then im going eleswhere.
Ive been looking at another vu box, expensive i know, but i had no problems in the past with these, or flashing images .

    6. Avatar photo Mark says:

      Update for phil,
I have been advised by zegemma not to use openvix on their boxes as there is a software problem, also that openatv is not a very good image…? However i have been told how to restart reset my boxes.
In doing so i have found out that the boxes sent by W,O,S are in fact used, or second hand and that the problems where in place long before my purchase, detail showed them to be used and crashing in november 2021. To restart the boxes when stuck 1 press and hold red key on remote while unplugging and plugging in at mains, or 2 go to zegemma online update with your online details, they can patch through a repair, both tried and both worked. The answer to the problem though is the usb key that W,O,S send with the box its claimed in advertising to be formatted to fat32, but its not! So im now very very wary from buying from them
Just letting you know, but these boxes make excellent substitute to sky or freesat especially with hardrives, and of course get everything free,

  5. Avatar photo Si says:

This is probably a good move. Sky kit is usually low tier scraping the bottom of the barrel stuff, and largely of no use once you leave their services. Take their router for example. Not paying for it up front and being able to hand it back at the end is a benefit.

    1. Avatar photo Michael Farrie says:

But at least the original Sky boxes and Sky+HD boxes would leave the free to air satellite channels so they were still useful and it was tempting to resubscribe as you saw the pay channels and their programmes all still listed with an upgrade screen, why couldn’t they have stuck with that approach for Sky Q and also Sky Stream, taking away the actual boxes and devices is pathetic.

  6. Avatar photo Mike says:

Wonder how long before they do the same to Sky Glass…

    1. Avatar photo haha says:

They can’t with Glass as you pay for the TV anyway through a separate credit agreement. – the only bit they can control is the app which is 1 month rollover only anyway. Not sure Sky want to come across as a 2023 version of Radio Rentals ( remember them?) 🙂

  7. Avatar photo anonymous says:

So Sky are scrapping owning it, so if you stop your subscription for a while, you have to return it, then pay another setup fee to get one again? Currently, you can just power it up and press a button to reactivate subscription. Nice earner?

    1. Avatar photo Alex A says:

From what I understand they’ll scrap the setup fee now you are no longer buying it from them.

They already took £20 off for doing an 18 month contract so (assuming they are worth £40, almost definetley not) they are expecting then to last about 3 years.

  8. Avatar photo Serf says:

Sky could evolve using quantum computer based AI and rebrand itself Skynet to demonstrate their expansion into networking and development of internet services. Initially Skynet will manage customers accounts with customer retention team rebranded as Terminators. It’s one way to get customers saying they’ll be back.

  9. Avatar photo nope says:

I still don’t understand why this isn’t just an app you can install on whatever device you like, like the Now products, netflix, prime video, pluto etc.

Until it is, I’m not interested. Lots of people are the same.

    1. Avatar photo Jack says:

Simple, Sky want to be the hub of where you go to watch. With their hardware they get to track what you do, what apps you use and what buttons you press on the remote. It’s all about getting as much data about you and what you do.

If it was an app they’d have to play by Apple / Google rules

  10. Avatar photo Bob says:

Well if it loaned equipment they would b legally obliged to repair it for free

If you fail to return it the only legal amount they could charge would be the current value of the box after about 5years it would have no real value

  11. Avatar photo Roger_Gooner says:

This brings Sky into line with Virgin Media whose kit, including their Stream boxes, belongs to them. I think this makes sense as you get free support including replacement when something goes wrong.

  12. Avatar photo Ben1980 says:

Still £40 per puck if trying to add more than one.

So that, price for ad skipping and borderline extortion for their base pack and movies when compared to other services.

Sports drive Sky – would be really interesting to see what they do if they ever lose the premier league.

  13. Avatar photo Duncan says:

We have sky glass broadband and phone line all with sky the WiFi is the worst can’t even watch the puck in the bedroom
