Network operator CityFibre has finished their £2m deployment of a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 3,600 homes in the village of Yaxley in Cambridgeshire (England), which is an extension of their existing network in nearby Peterborough that covers over 68,000 premises.
The project, which was delivered via civil engineering firm Granemore Group, originally began in mid-2022 and has made good progress since then and today covers almost 90% of the residential properties.
Rebecca Stephens, CityFibre’s Regional Partnership Director, said: “Yaxley is today one of the best-connected places in the country thanks to the full fibre infrastructure that our team has rolled out across the village in less than a year. We cannot wait for the community to reap the many benefits of full fibre, from seamless streaming at home to business productivity and innovation uplifts.”

The work forms part of CityFibre’s wider effort to cover up to 8 million UK premises (funded by c.£2.4bn in equity and c.£4.9bn debt) – across over 285 cities, towns and villages (c.30% of the UK) – by the end of 2025 (here). The operator has so far covered a total of 2.6 million premises (March 2023), but only 2.3 million of those are currently considered to be Ready for Service (RFS) by an ISP.
Give us news about XGSPON rollout Mark. Any new info it’s April 2023 now. Cityfibre not going to do a PR?
They already announced that it would start the main rollout “from” now, so I’m not sure if they need to do another one just yet.
Fair, Mark, but given projects can be delayed, sometimes it’s interesting to here that something is on track.
FWIW, Cue: CityFibre were reaffirming, in a tweet back in February, that the April timetable still holds. https://twitter.com/CityFibre/status/1621121024333910016
After speaking to people with inside knowledge, I believe Cityfibre are tidying up and finishing off the builds they’ve already started and won’t be starting any new builds until they see improvements in their take up percentages.
I guess their owners/investors are getting twitchy and are eager to see some returns (or at least some profit on the horizon) before they sink more money into it.
OK makes sense and that would explain the TV advert campaign announced a few days ago.
Incorrect, updated plans but next phase about about to start. The business plan was never to break even by this stage.
@Facts “The business plan was never to break even by this stage”.
Nevermind breaking even, I thought Cityfibre said they would start making profit in 2023?
@Facts Obviously you work for Cityfibre, can you tell us more about the ‘updated plans’?
Why has the build slowed up? Is it part of the new plan?
