Digital infrastructure firm Boldyn Networks (formerly BAI Comms) has announced that they’re working with the Greater London Authority (GLA), Virgin Media and Transport for London (TfL) to deploy a new “high-speed” full fibre network across the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames.
The new network is intended to provide vital connectivity to 41 CCTV (camera) locations across the borough, which will record higher quality and more reliable images (i.e. deterrence of criminal and anti-social behaviour) – enabling the output to be used as evidence in court. The work will also complement their existing project with Kingston Council to deploy smart columns to boost mobile broadband (4G and 5G) connectivity, improve council services and enhance public safety.
The network has been installed alongside delivery partner Virgin Media. The project was funded by the GLA, via TfL and it forms part of the wider Mayor of London’s Connected London programme, to improve digital connectivity across London boroughs and build the foundations for smart city applications (i.e. new sensors to monitor air quality, traffic congestion and supporting councils to enhance public safety).

The announcement doesn’t contain much information on the network itself, but we assume this reflects their previously announced plan to install a 10.4km long fibre ring across the borough.
Billy D’Arcy, CEO of UK & Ireland at Boldyn Networks, said:
“Boldyn Networks is delighted to be collaborating with the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames to deliver a new fibre network for the borough. High-quality digital infrastructure is an essential foundation for economic growth and innovation, and we look forward to working with more boroughs across London so that they can harness the benefits of high-speed digital connectivity.”
Theo Blackwell, Chief Digital Officer for London, said:
“Making sure that every borough in London has a robust and reliable digital infrastructure, with the support of the latest innovations in digital technology, is crucial to the Mayor’s commitment to making the capital a better, safer and more prosperous city for all. The introduction of the new fibre network across Kingston upon Thames, funded by the Greater London Authority and installed by Boldyn Networks, will hugely enhance public safety and connectivity throughout the borough and lay the foundations to positively transform local services in the future.”
This follows the recent installation of a high-speed full fibre network in the borough of Sutton (here). These fibre networks complement Boldyn Network’s 20-year concession with TfL to deliver a backbone of fibre connectivity across the capital and high-speed mobile connectivity across the London Underground.
State surveillance has nothing to do with safety of the citizens
If more London criminals are caught on camera, more get arrested. Checkmate, surveillance makes people safer. Definitely works in China, been there, very safe
Awful comparison. The cops here won’t even arrest when they have a GPS location of stolen goods. Today there are articles saying they are avoiding arresting rapists because prisons are full. In my neighborhood there was a rapist arrested for 8 counts… Only got 4 years. Meanwhile some guy who was sharing football matches online got a 25 year sentence.
