Network builder MS3, which is being supported by 30 UK ISPs as part of its work to deploy a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across the North of England (here), has announced that they’ve completed their full fibre roll-out across the Lincolnshire town of Scunthorpe.
At present MS3’s main focus is on the Lincolnshire and Yorkshire areas of England and the operator ultimately aims to reach 535,000 premises across the North of England by the end of 2025 (here). Scunthorpe was one of the first locations on their list, which entered the construction phase early last year, and it has now become one of the first towns to see a completed build.
The completed network reaches about 37,000 homes and businesses across the town, which makes it one of MS3’s largest deployments, albeit one that does face plenty of gigabit-capable competition from Virgin Media and Openreach – both of which have wide coverage of the town. A few smaller areas have also been reached by rival FTTP builds from Quickline and ITS Technology.

Guy Miller, CEO of MS3 Networks, said:
“We’re on a rapid network deployment plan, which involves covering over 535,000 homes and businesses across the North of England by the end of 2025. It’s important that we work as efficiently as possible to hit this target. Completing our network build in Scunthorpe marks a moment of success for MS3, but also for the community, which can enjoy affordable, accessible broadband.”
Local consumers can look toward ISPs such as MTH Networks, Direct Save Telecom, OpenFibre, Octaplus, Zone Broadband, Home Telecom (TalkTalk), Yayzi Broadband and many more for support. Related packages tend to be cheaper than those on the more established networks and also benefit from symmetric speeds.
Did they use poles, though? That is the question!
In my street and most others they have used the poles that are already there
Strange how they’ve done that everywhere, absolutely everywhere those poles were usable, besides Hull and the East Ridings of Yorkshire.
Whatever could be different between there and the rest of the country?
The only thing they did was to put in a hole and there own manhole cover next to the one open reach use for there ducting, they had to put there own in to run the cables from one pole to the other underground, but they used the same ducting as open reach so it was just a manhole sized hole, that’s it.
The MS3 pole on my street was installed in August 2023. In November 2023 it was shcheduled for removal until I contacted MS3 to express my concern that the removal of the pole would mean that myself and other residents on my street would be deprived of access to their promised Ultra Fast Fibre Broadband build. They did seem to relent and closed the scheduled removal of the pole. It is now January 2024 and yet again MS3 Networks are scheduled to remove the very same pole again between 09 February and 13 February. I live in the DN15 7UH area of Scunthorpe which has many poles so if you live around this area and have already have pole intsalled hoping that, one day, you may be blessed with Ultra Fast Fibre Broadband, be warned MS3 Networks can remove a pole without notice because it seems they care more about people who have objected to the pole than they do potential customers. You can check MS3 Networks pole intallations / removals on the mastdatabase.co.uk website under Streetworks. Thanks to this website I now know the MS3 Networks pole in my street is being removed so it looks increasing unlikely that Ultra Fast Broadband is coming to my area Scunthorpe (DN15 7UH) anytime soon 🙁
I joined last December, first three months was brilliant, rock steady no issues, but now they have overstretched themselves, latency, high ping, speeds all over the place, very unstable connection,I got it for online gaming, not a chance at peak times, unplayable sometimes,I do believe they have tried to fix it but still having problems, think there trying again at the end of the month.fttp should not be like this.
Hopefully they get it sorted soon.
That’s poor. High ping times with FTTP are completely unacceptable. I’m on BT/OR and my ping is usually 6-8ms and seen ping times with BT as low as 2-3ms in London. Suggests to me that their routers have insufficient capacity to deal the amount of connections they have. Any system is only as good as the weakest link.
Yeah 200 ping on fttp is not what it should be,but over the last couple of days it seems to have got a lot better,so fingers crossed
@XGS This is a reply I received from MS3 Networks (RE:Removal of Telecommunications Pole (Ref: H7003MS3-SCN101-FTTH-56) if you a interested in their “alleged” FTTP Broadband service in Scunthorpe or anywhere else for that matter.
