Network operator nexfibre, which shares some of their parentage with ISP partner Virgin Media (VMO2), has published their latest quarterly (Q3 2024) progress update on the roll-out of their new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) broadband network. This includes details on build locations for 2025 and 2026.

We’ll start with the usual recap. Back in 2022 Telefónica, Liberty Global and InfraVia Capital Partners setup nexfibre as a new £4.5bn joint venture (here), which aims to deploy an open access full fibre network to reach “up to” 7 million UK homes (starting with 5m by 2026) in areas NOT served by Virgin Media’s own network of 16m+ premises. The funding reflects £3.3bn of fully underwritten financing and up to £1.4bn in equity commitments.

NOTE: Virgin Media is currently the only ISP on nexfibre’s network via an “exclusive partnership” (here), but more ISPs will be added in the future (here) and Virgin’s own network will also open up to wholesale via NetCo in H1 2025 (here).

The operator so far deployed their network to cover 1,557,000 premises ‘Ready for Service’ (up from 1,277,800 premises in the last update), which doesn’t yet include last year’s acquisition of Upp and its c.175,000 premises, and they’re in the process of investing another £1bn this year to help cover an additional 1 million UK premises (i.e. on top of their existing coverage). This should get them to around c.2m by the end of 2024.

The latest Q3 2024 update reveals planned build locations for 2025 and into 2026, although this is produced in a .PDF format that makes it difficult to easily identify the changes from the prior update. In addition, there’s a fairly vague map of their updated deployment plan.

    These blury maps again!

Looking on the Better Internet site, Nexfibre are shown as starting work in Ferndown in the next few weeks. Hopefully this is the start of covering the whole area.

Yes I think they are working that way. They did the east of the new forest first now working down the west side.

Any news on them getting alternative ISPs on board? I was lucky enough to get nexfibre but the service has been flaky (websites don’t load randomly but fine on mobile, car charger loses connection but never did on 30mb copper Vodafone connection). Really don’t want to step back to copper but need a decent isp. Only other fibre option is what was giganet but reports aren’t good from friends in the area.

I’ve been waiting for an update on the wholesale side of NexFibre, but still nothing.

    2. Avatar photo Cheesemp says:

That’s rubbish. I’m really hope for someone else to become available so I can switch away without phoning VM! I’ve got about a year…

Something quite strange is going on with East Anglia here. The map is vague but loads of areas around King’s Lynn and Spalding are marked as “current footprint” but there’s no evidence of any nexfibre footprint or even works here. Even the property-level map at ThinkBroadband shows nothing from nexfibre anywhere near these areas.

    1. Avatar photo Fibre says:

That’s the former Upp footprint that is about to light up

  5. Avatar photo Jordan says:

mark can you please tell nexfibre to make a better map like openreachs or something? we dont like this blurry ahh image

    1. Avatar photo Phil says:

      100% Agree!

  6. Avatar photo Just a thought says:

How big do they need to get before OFCOM make them share infrastructure PIA style?

    1. Avatar photo Big Dave says:

I suspect that is why Nexfibre has been setup as a separate company – to stop VMO2 getting the attention from Ofcom that Openreach get.

    2. Avatar photo Roger_Gooner says:

OFCOM won’t need to be involved as nexfibre was set up as a wholesaler and wants ISP partners as well as tenant Virgin Media.

A network I would avoid, only going to if I really had to, just like Virgin and Openreach

  8. Avatar photo Martin bailey says:

Think I have some planned in benfleet ss7 coming up so hopefully, can’t wait, BT are costing me a fortune.

  9. Avatar photo Martin says:

Comex 2000 are rapidly putting new fibre cabs next to the the cable cabs in Erskine Renfrewshire.

This is not in the map.

I’m guessing this new FTTP network with be Nexfibre.

    1. Avatar photo CJ says:

Nexfibre is only used for network expansion to properties that aren’t covered by the existing cable TV network.

If there is cable already, the fibre upgrade will be Virgin Media’s Project Mustang. The new fibre network in those areas is owned by VM directly, not Nexfibre, and they don’t appear in Nexfibre updates unless they are also doing network expansion for Nexfibre in the same area.

  10. Avatar photo Pete says:

Still no hint of an go live eta for hfc areas which already have xgspon overlay.

  11. Avatar photo Rik says:

I’ve been on Nexfibre’s network for the last two months and it’s been pretty much flawless. The only things letting them down at the minute for me at least are the lack of choice (only Virgin) and again down to Virgin, their extremely locked down Hub 5x which doesn’t have a modem mode, let alone allow users to use the DNS of their choosing.

For what it’s worth, I work for Zen, but sadly they can’t give me FTTP as their partners aren’t offering it in my town at the minute.

  12. Avatar photo TM says:

I not sure if this is the correct forum to express my views regarding what I about to say but
I have been informed that in Jan 2025 Nextfibre will be installing fibre cables where I live.
I have not got an issue with this being installed as it gives the customers more choice in this competitive market.
However, that said what I am not impressed with the eyesore that is left following the work completion to the pavements.
They are left with black tarmacadam scars which runs the length of pathways in residential areas including dropped kerbs/driveways.
The black meanduring rivers of tarmac are an eyesore to the environment in which they have been installed.
I am not particularly happy that my driveway/ drop kerb which I paid for will be dug up to accommodate this upgrade only for it to be left with a scar which I do not want!
I would like to be consulted about this before the work take place to discuss where I would be happy for the cables to be laid,to be honest I don’t want them!!!
If, some thought, care and consideration of how the pathways were left, as they were found, ideally without the eyesore your works leave, then this would not be a problem!
It is disgraceful how this is allowed.

    1. Avatar photo Michael Bateman says:

you don’t own the pavement so it has nothing to do with you.

regardless, once they are weathered they are not so noticeable.
