Network operator nexfibre, which shares some of its parentage with UK ISP Virgin Media (they harness the same build teams), has today confirmed another batch of four locations across the United Kingdom that will benefit from an upgrade to their latest full fibre (FTTP, XGS-PON) broadband technology.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is this morning launched an initial review of the proposed £2bn acquisition (here) of alternative full fibre UK broadband operator Netomnia (Substantial Group) by the parents of nexfibre and Virgin Media (O2) – Liberty Global, Telefónica and InfraVia.

Network operator nexfibre, which shares some of its parentage with broadband ISP Virgin Media (they harness the same build teams), has today confirmed another batch of seven locations and regions across the UK that will benefit from an upgrade to their latest full fibre (FTTP, XGS-PON) broadband technology. Network operator nexfibre, which shares some of its parentage with Virgin Media (harnessing the same build engine), has today announced a £2.9 million investment in the large County Durham (England) town of Darlington to help upgrade 18,000 homes to full fibre (FTTP) broadband. The work is linked to the planned acquisition of altnet Netomnia.

The Senior UK Plus Analyst for Point Topic, Veronica Speiser, has reportedly warned that smaller alternative broadband networks may have to raise their average revenue per user (ARPU) to approximately £45 per month just to breakeven. But most altnets are currently said to have ARPU’s of between £25 and £35, while larger operators operate within a wider range of £30 to £50.

Network operator nexfibre, which shares some of its parentage with Virgin Media (harnessing the same build teams), O2 and giffgaff, has today announced a £44 million investment in Greater Manchester to help upgrade 318,000 premises to full fibre (FTTP) broadband. The announcement relates to the planned acquisition of “fellow ‘altnet’” Netomnia.

Network operator nexfibre, which shares some of its parentage with Virgin Media (harnessing the same build teams) and giffgaff, has today followed up the recent announcements for Crawley and Bradford (here) by announcing a further seven UK locations – reflecting a total of 226,000 premises at a cost of £31.7m – that will benefit from an upgrade to their latest full fibre (FTTP / XGS-PON) broadband technology.

Following on from this morning’s announcement of nexfibre’s network expansion across Bradford (here), we’ve now spotted that the operator also appears to have announced a similar £6.8m deployment to reach “up to” a further 42,000 premises in the West Sussex (England) town of Crawley with their full fibre (FTTP) network.

Network operator nexfibre, which is in the process of merging with Netomnia (here) and shares some of its parentage with ISP partners Virgin Media (O2) and giffgaff, appears to have announced a new investment of £9.9m to expand their full fibre broadband network across 61,000 premises in Bradford (West Yorkshire, England).

Network operator nexfibre, which shares some of its parentage with its ISP partners Virgin Media (O2) and giffgaff, plan to expand on their original commitment to offer as many as 1,000 youth centres across the UK access to their full fibre network for free. But following the planned acquisition of Netomnia (here), they now expect to reach a further 456 centres.

Mobile and internet provider giffgaff has today expanded their range of monthly rolling fixed full fibre (FTTP) broadband plans by introducing the option of a cheaper 24-month minimum contract term. The move makes the monthly pricing on each of their packages between £3 and £4 cheaper. Existing members will also get 3 months of service for free.

Telecoms giant VMO2 (Virgin Media and O2) is reportedly engaged in talks with VodafoneThree (Vodafone and Three UK) over a possible wholesale broadband deal, which would enable Vodafone UK to sell packages to consumers via Virgin/nexfibre’s growing full fibre (FTTP) network. Separately, VMO2’s CEO has admitted that O2’s move to hike prices for existing mobile users “wasn’t the best decision“.

Network operator nexfibre, which shares some parentage with its UK ISP partners Virgin Media (O2) and giffgaff, has just published their latest quarterly Q4 2025 build update and confirmed that their new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network now covers 2.6 million UK premises. But future expansion looks set to come from consolidation.

A small group of homes in the East Dorset (England) town of Ferndown have effectively been denied access to a new gigabit broadband network because a local housing association, which owns a crucial piece of land, are only willing to grant Virgin Media’s (nexfibre) engineers a wayleave (legal access agreement) for an individual property; not the wider area.

Mobile and internet provider giffgaff has today confirmed that they’ve introduced a “price lock” on their monthly rolling full fibre broadband plans, which means that new and existing customers of the fixed like service “can rest assured that there won’t be any price hikes for their monthly rolling plan in 2026“.

The latest Q4 2025 results from Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have just been published and reveal that their gigabit broadband network increased its UK coverage by 115,100 premises in the quarter (down from 139k in Q3), while related customers fell to total 5,687,600 (down by -16.7k in Q4 vs +60.8k in Q3). But their mobile base grew and 5G outdoor population coverage hit 87%.

In a small but welcome development. Mobile and internet provider giffgaff has announced that both new and existing customers of their home broadband products – powered by nexfibre’s UK full fibre network (covers 2.5 million premises) – will benefit from a change of standard price on their 200Mbps tier that reduces it by -£1 to £29 per month.
