Mobile operator and internet provider giffgaff, which has already made their new full fibre (FTTP) broadband packages available to 4.2 million premises via nexfibre and Virgin Media’s UK networks, has moved to further entice new customers to the service by offering to buy them out of their existing contracts (worth up to £300 in billing credits).

Mobile operator and internet provider giffgaff, which is gradually making their new full fibre (FTTP – XGS-PON) broadband packages available to UK consumers via nexfibre’s and Virgin Media’s networks (here and here), has revealed that they’ve increased their serviceable footprint to 4.2 million homes and rising.

Network operator nexfibre, which shares some of their parentage with Virgin Media (harnessing the same build teams) and have deployed their full fibre (FTTP) broadband network to cover 2.6 million UK premises, has created a new ‘Director of Corporate Strategy‘ post and appointed Colin Rand to take on the role.

Mobile operator and internet provider giffgaff, which originally started to launch their full fibre (FTTP) broadband packages via nexfibre’s national UK network in September 2025 (here), looks finally set to resolve a long-running obstruction that made it hard for Virgin Media’s customers on the same network to switch to the provider.

The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) recently published several responses from BT (Openreach), Grain Connect, Sky Broadband and Hyperoptic to the ‘Areas of Focus’ document for their Phase 2 competition investigation of Netomnia’s proposed £2bn acquisition by the parents of Virgin Media (O2) and nexfibre. The early feedback provides some useful market perspective.

Mobile operator giffgaff, which is owned by Telefónica UK (part of the VMO2 Group) and uses O2’s virtual operator platform (mvno), recently published their annual accounts to the end of 2025 and revealed that their mobile base grew by 142,000 members (up from 100k in 2024) to total 4,260,368. The operator also had 671 full fibre broadband customers.

Alternative network operator Netomnia (Substantial Group), which has so far expanded their full fibre broadband (FTTP) network to cover over 3 million UK premises (inc. 500,000 customers) and is in the process of being acquired by the parents of Virgin Media (O2) and nexfibre for £2bn, has reached an agreement over interim undertakings with the competition watchdog (CMA).

The latest Q2 2026 results from network operators Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have today reported a fall in consumer broadband customers of -28,200 to total 5,417,900 (vs -5.3k in Q1), while their mobile base declined slightly to total 46.428m (down from 46.44m) and outdoor 5G+ (5GSA) population coverage remains at 86%.

Telecoms analyst firm Point Topic has published further analysis of the £2bn acquisition of full fibre alternative UK broadband network Netomnia (Substantial Group) by the parents of nexfibre and Virgin Media (O2). The research highlights how much of a bearing a single piece of competition-law math – the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) – may have on the deal being cleared or not.

New customers looking to join broadband ISP Virgin Media (O2) should note that the ISP has introduced a big discount on their 1,130Mbps download (104Mbps upload) package, which has been reduced to just £26.99 per month (affiliate link) on a 24-month minimum term (price increases to £30.99 from April 2027 and £34.99 from April 2028).

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a cheeky email advert from broadband ISP Grain Connect, which headlined with a warning about Virgin Media “taking over YouFibre & BRSK“. But YouFibre successfully complained that the rest of the promotion had made “misleading price rise claims“.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has today announced that it will skip a Phase 1 review of the proposed £2bn acquisition (here) of alternative full fibre UK broadband operator Netomnia (Substantial Group) by nexfibre (Liberty Global, Telefónica and InfraVia), which will instead see them skip right to a deeper Phase 2 competition investigation.

Back in May 2026 we reported (here) that broadband ISP Virgin Media Business (VMB) were preparing to introduce new packages for small business customers that would offer symmetric speeds via their latest XGS-PON based full fibre (FTTP) network at speeds of up to 2Gbps (2,000Mbps). ISPreview has spotted that they’ve now quietly introduced the new plans.

Mobile and internet provider giffgaff, which initially launched their full fibre broadband packages via nexfibre’s national network in September 2025 (here), has confirmed to ISPreview that new customers in many Fibre Up (Project Mustang) areas on Virgin Media’s national FTTP (XGS-PON) network can now also take their packages.
