Mobile network and broadband operator Vodafone (VodafoneThree) has today announced the launch of a new Scam Call Protection feature – available as part of their Secure Net Mobile service, which uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to identify fraudulent, scam and nuisance calls before customers even pick up.
The network-level service works automatically in the background to analyse incoming calls in real time and spot suspicious behaviour, before flagging high‑risk numbers to the customer. “If a call appears unusual, customers will receive a simple on‑screen alert flagging it as a potential scam call – putting them firmly in control of whether to pick up or decline,” said the announcement.
The new feature forms part of Vodafone’s existing Secure Net Mobile service, which also includes advanced parental controls, 24/7 ID monitoring to help guard against identity theft, and real‑time virus and malware protection.

Rob Winterschladen, Consumer Director at VodafoneThree, said:
“Scam calls are becoming increasingly harder to spot, and it’s easy to feel caught off guard. Scam Call Protection on Vodafone Secure Net Mobile gives customers an extra layer of reassurance – constantly working in the background to monitor calls, and flagging known and suspected scam calls. The introduction of Scam Call Protection strengthens our commitment to provide comprehensive built‑in digital security, helping people feel safer, more informed and more in control of their digital world.”
Most of the United Kingdom’s major telecoms providers have already implemented various similar technical measures to tackle Nuisance Calls and Scam Calls. But these aren’t always 100% effective, and not all operators have introduced the same level of protections. Suffice to say, there’s still plenty of scope for improvement and Vodafone’s new feature forms part of that effort. Ofcom are also forever pushing new changes to boost national defences against such fraud (here, here and here).
Secure Net Mobile is available to Vodafone mobile customers free for the first three months, and then £2 per month thereafter.

Isn’t this a bit like being expected to pay for your own PPE? Safety and security being an added paid for extra, surely scam protection should be a regulatory requirement. Imagine another utility – we can deliver methane (odourless natural gas) to your home ideal for cooking and heating, good deal. If you want the human detectable safety smell (mercaptan) added it’s an extra £2.
